Women’s Lacrosse Heads North to Carroll

Titans to face Pios at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team embarks on its last regular season road trip, as the Titans head to Carroll University for a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin contest Saturday, April 12. Action is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Schneider Stadium. 

Illinois Wesleyan enters the game with a 6-6 overall record, and is 1-0 in CCIW play after defeating Augustana College, 19-8, Wednesday, April 9. IWU's offense was led by a career-best six points from freshman Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit). Gibson scored four goals to go along with two assists. Seniors Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) led the team in goals with five, while Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) totaled a team-high three assists. Setzler and junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) finished with a team-best five ground balls apiece, and Newton's four caused turnovers were a game-high. Fiandaca and junior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) each tallied a team-high four draw controls. Senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Francis) notched the win in goal after making nine saves in 45 minutes of work. 

The trio of Setzler, Newton, and Gibson lead the offense, and are close in the points run. Setzler sits atop with 27, followed closely by 26 from Newton, and Gibson's 25. Fiandaca has a team-high 22 goals, while Newton is second with 18, and Setzler's 17 are good for third. With 10 assists apiece, Setzler and junior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) lead the team, followed by nine helpers from Gibson. 

At the draw, Newton's 48 draw controls are a team-best. Fiandaca is second with 30, and Setzler sits in third with 26 draw controls. The three also lead the team in ground balls, just in a different order. Setzler leads the team with 37 ground balls, followed by 34 from Fiandaca, and Newton's 33. 

As a team, the Titans rank 16th nationally in caused turnovers per game with an average of 13.92. Fiandaca's 37 caused turnovers are a team-high, while Newton sits in second with 19, and freshman Carly Bajusz (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) is third with 14. 

In goal for the Green and White, Rymarcsuk leads the Titans with 106 saves in 612:15 minutes of work. The senior enters the contest with a 6-6 record in between the posts, and owns a .473 save percentage. 

IWU and CU (7-3, 1-0 CCIW) will meet each other for the 13th time, with Illinois Wesleyan holding an 8-4 advantage in the series. The Titans took the last matchup, 11-9, April 13, 2024, marking the first win over the Pioneers since 2019. The win secured the Green and White a share of second place in the CCIW, and earned it the third seed in the conference tournament. In the win, Britney Maldonado smashed the program's single-season assist record, as she recorded her 50th assist in the contest. Maldonado tied for the team-high in points with six, coming off a team-best five assists. Riepe scooped up a team-leading five ground balls to go along with five caused turnovers. Logging all 60 minutes between the posts, Rymarcsuk notched the win behind 11 saves. Carroll enters the contest off a 5-3 win over Carthage College Wednesday, April 9.
