Women’s Lacrosse Road Trips to Carroll for CCIW Tournament Semifinal

Titans take on Pios at 7 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After sneaking in as the No. 4 seed in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Semifinal, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team travels to top-seeded Carroll University for a semifinal date with the Pioneers (14-2, 5-0 CCIW) Wednesday, April 29. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. inside Schneider Stadium. 

IWU (6-10, 2-3 CCIW) escaped Elmhurst University with a 10-9 win Saturday, April 25. Senior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) led the team with four goals, while her and junior Chloe Heyl (Houston, Texas-Emery/Weiner) tied for the team-lead at four points apiece. Heyl tallied a team-best two assists. Newton finished alongside sophomore Sophie Shore (St. Peters, Mo.-Francis Howell Central) for the lead in caused turnovers, as each notched two. Newton added two draw controls to her stat line, the most by a Titan in the game. Sophomore Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) logged the win in goal, as she made 12 saves over the span of 60 minutes. 

Newton and Shore represented the Green and White on the All-CCIW teams, released Tuesday, April 28, as both landed Second Team All-CCIW honors. Newton notched the accolade for the second season in a row, while Shore collected the honor for the first time in her career.

Senior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) leads the offense this season with 48 points. Her 25 assists are the most on the team, while she is tied for second on the team alongside Shore with 23 goals. Newton is second on the squad with 39 points, aided by her team-best 34 goals. Shore closely follows with 37 points to sit third. With 14 assists, Shore and sophomore Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) are tied for second behind DiGiovanni.

With 50 ground balls and 39 caused turnovers, Shore leads the defense in both categories. Newton closely follows with 49 and 36, respectively. Brown rounds out the top-three in ground balls with 46, while senior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) is third on the team in caused turnovers with 39. Newton sits atop the team in draw controls with 67. Shore and Riepe follow with 38 and 36, respectively. 

In goal, Brown holds the team-lead with 127 saves over the span of 682:45 minutes in goal. She enters with a 5-8 record and a .391 save percentage. Freshman Allison Vervynck (Overland Park, Kan.-Saint Thomas Aquinas) has logged the other 277:15 in between the pipes, having made 47 saves en route to a .385 clip.

Illinois Wesleyan will meet Carroll on the field for the 15th time, with the Titans holding a slim 8-6 advantage in the series. CU bested the Green and White in the regular season meeting this year, claiming a 22-5 victory Saturday, April 11. Shore led the team with three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Brown tallied a team-high 12 saves over 45 minutes in goal. The Pios beat Carthage College, 8-6, Saturday, April 25, securing their second straight CCIW Regular Season Championship.
