Women’s Tennis Closes Out Spring Break with Win Over Earlham

Titans record eighth in of season, tying most since 2012-13

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team closed out its spring break trip in Gulf Shores, Ala. with a 5-2 win over Earlham College Friday afternoon, March 14. With the win, IWU ups its record to 8-9, tying the most wins in a season since the 2012-13 campaign. Earlham falls to 3-5.

The Titans started the match off by sweeping the doubles portion of the contest. Sophomores Amber Ehrlich (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood) and Olivia Bell (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3. Freshmen Gabi Lipske (Gurnee, Ill.-Mundelein) and Katie Van Heuklon (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) secured the one point decision with a 6-4 victory in the No. 2 doubles spot. Senior Andie Wilson (Champaign, Ill.-Centennial) and junior Marianna Arias (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) locked in the sweep with a 7-6 win at No. 3 doubles, using a 7-5 tiebreaker to secure the victory.

Ehrlich, Van Heuklon, Bell, and Wilson each notched another win on the day, as the four Titans picked up wins in singles action. Playing in the top spot, Ehrlich used a comeback to secure her win. After dropping the first set, 6-3, the Springfield, Ill. native battled back to take the next two sets, 6-2. Van Heuklon also used some extra time to secure her win, coming at No. 3 singles. The freshman took the opening set, taking it 7-6 behind a 7-4 tiebreaker. After dropping the second set, 6-0, Van Heuklon snagged the win with a third set score of 6-2.

Bell breezed to a victory at No. 4 singles behind set scores of 6-2, 6-1. Wilson closed out the win for the Titans, as she took her sets at No. 5 individuals 6-2, 6-4.

Illinois Wesleyan returns home to host Loras College Saturday, March 29. IWU will honor its two seniors, Wilson and Kate Christian (Washington, Ill.-Washington Community), prior to the start of the 1 p.m. match.
