Box Score
PORTLAND, Ore. - In the first game of its west coast spring break trip, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team defeated Lewis & Clark College, 22-13, Sunday, March 10. With the win, IWU improves to 2-2 overall, while the Pioneers stumble to 0-7.

Sophomore Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) put on a show, as she led the offense with a career-high seven goals, tying the program's single-game record. She joins fellow sophomore Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), who tied the record eight days ago against Edgewood College, and Cassandra Jones, who set the record against North Central College April 24, 2021, as the only Titans to post seven goals in a contest. Newton also finished with career-highs of 10 draw controls and four caused turnovers, both of which led the Green and White.

Senior Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) paced the Titans with nine points on three goals and a team-high six assists, tying her career-high. Sophomore Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) finished with career-highs of seven points and three assists, along with four goals. Junior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) also shattered her career-bests, as she accumulated six points with four assists. Fountain finished with five goals.

Amid her monstrous performance, Newton led the defense with four caused turnovers, while Setzler added three, both of which are career-bests. Hanson and sophomore Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) each added a pair. Riepe's five ground balls were the most by a Titan in the match. Hanson tied her career-best with nine draw controls, while Fountain added four.

In goal, junior Bri Kiser (Crown Point, Ind.-Crown Point) logged all 60 minutes of action, as she picked up her second win after making five saves.

As a team, IWU saw advantages in shots (51-24), shots on goal (40-18), ground balls (21-11), draw controls (24-15), and finished with 19 turnovers while forcing the Pioneers to commit 22. The Titans went 8-for-12 on clear attempts, while Lewis & Clark had the upper hand with a 11-of-12 showing.

After Lewis & Clark cracked the scoreboard first at the 13:18 mark, Hanson won the draw control and marched down the field to answer nine seconds later to even the score at one goal apiece. Shortly after, the Titans took their first lead of the young game, as Maldonado found Setzler for her third goal of the season with 12:27 remaining in the first.

A man-up free position goal for the Pioneers leveled the score at two all, but IWU once again quickly responded, as Newton got the Green and White the ball off the draw, and Maldonado buried her first goal of the game.

Riepe forced a Pioneers turnover, setting up the hot Titan offense. With 8:16 on the clock, Maldonado got her third point of the game, as she dished a pass to Newton, who buried her first goal of the season, upping the score to 4-2, and causing Lewis & Clark to call timeout.

Out of the timeout, Newton took the draw and Hanson found the back of the net to push the lead to three. IWU would score one more time before the Pioneers could end the run, as Setzler found Newton for a goal to extend the lead to four.

After Lewis & Clark ended the Green and White scoring run, Newton notched back-to-back goals, but the Pioneers found the net one more time before the end of the quarter, as the Titans finished the first 15 minutes of action with an 8-4 advantage.

Illinois Wesleyan registered the first goal of the second quarter, with Maldonado finding Setzler for her second goal of the game at the 11:56 mark. L&C responded with a goal of its own, but Maldonado continued her dominant performance with back-to-back goals. The Titans net four more goals in the quarter, and Kiser made two consecutive saves, one coming on a free position, with time expiring to take a 15-7 lead into halftime.

After a big second quarter from Fountain and Maldonado, the two teamed up to open the second half of action, as Maldonado found Fountain for a man-up goal with 12:03 remaining in the third. Freshman Carolyn Meyer (Roselle, Ill.-James B. Conant) recorded her first collegiate point, as she used a pass from Setzler to notch a goal, upping IWU's lead to nine en route to the convincing win.

Illinois Wesleyan heads to Linfield University for a bout with the Wildcats Tuesday, March 12. Action is set to begin at 6 p.m. PT. A link to the live stream can be found by clicking here, and live stats can be accessed by clicking here.
