Titans Post Six Top-Five Finishes at Dubuque Invite

Titans set sights on CCIW Championships, Feb. 15

DUBUQUE, Iowa – A strong penultimate meet ahead of the conference championships saw the Illinois Wesleyan University men's wrestling team come away with seven Titans placing in their respective weight classes at the University of Dubuque Invite Saturday, Feb. 3.

Competing in his first meet of the season, junior Froylan Racey (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) posted a 2-1 record in the 125-pound weight class. Racey opened the day with a 16-7 major decision win over Alexander Needham of Dubuque before taking his next opponent in a 15-0 technical fall to reach the first-place match. Jake Hamulak of Chicago won the 125-pound bracket by pinning Racey (4:38).

Senior Jonathan Rios (Waukegan, Ill.-Waukegan) also competed in the 125-pound weight class where he ultimately finished fourth. Rios turned in a 1-2 record for the day, claiming his victory in a 10-4 decision over Glen Cahilly of Chicago. 

Freshman Austin Johnston (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) finished fifth overall in the 133-pound bracket with a 2-2 record. Johnston won both of his matches by way of pins in 3 minutes and 25 seconds and 1 minute and 42 seconds, respectively, bringing his season pins total to 10. 

Another Titan staking a claim in the place-winner category was sophomore Jaxson Roberts (Herscher, Ill. Bishop McNamara) in the 141-pound bracket. Roberts notched a 1-2 record in his second meet of the year while adding a pin to his resume after defeating Jacob Redington of Cornell College in just under two minutes (1:48). Roberts faced Keaton Mayernik of Chicago in the third-place match, falling in a 13-0 major decision to take fourth at 141 pounds. 

After receiving a bye in his opening round of the 149 pound weight class, junior Omar AlQammaz (Orland Park, Ill.-Victor J. Andrew) took his match against Mohammed Abbosov of Wisconsin-Stevens Point into overtime but ultimately fell in a sudden victory (SV-1 10-7). AlQammaz came back in his second match of the day pinning his opponent in under two minutes (1:42) to advance to the third-place match where he finished fourth overall due to a technical fall (15-0).

Junior Bobby Conroy's (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Louis University High) second-place finish in the 184-pound bracket was boosted by a 2-1 record on the day. Conroy won his opening match in a 16-5 major decision over Jack Callen of UW-Stevens Point before pinning Michael McCutcheon of Dubuque in one minute and 24 seconds to advance to the championship match. Conroy fell in his final match of the day to Hutch Lynott of Chicago in a 8-0 major decision. 

IWU will compete in its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship since the program's return Thursday, Feb. 15 at R.A. Faganel Hall in Elmhurst, Ill. This year's championships will be hosted by Elmhurst University.
