Four Wrestlers Place at CCIW Championships

Zvonar earns All-CCIW honors

KENOSHA, Wis.- Freshman Tyson Zvonar (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) led the Illinois Wesleyan University men's wrestling team with an all-conference finish at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships Saturday, Feb. 14. The Titans took eighth-place in the 10-team tournament behind four top-six grapplers.

Zvonar, a rookie 133-pounder, opened his day with a comeback 14-6 major decision over MSOE's Alexander Ramirez to advance to the semifinals.

After dropping his semifinal bout, Zvonar moved into the third-place match with a 10-2 decision over Concordia Wisconsin's Anastacio Martinez. With All-CCIW status on the line, the Frankfort, Ill. native defeated Aurora's Tyler Evitts, 10-2, to earn the first accolade of his career.  

IWU heavyweight Alexander Jackson (Harvey, Ill.-Bremen) pinned Elmhurst's Mike Milovich in 1:52 in his first competition of the year. The win advanced him to the consolation semifinals where he beat MSOE's Jake Schmitt on an 8-4 decision. Jackson was upended in the third-place match, 8-6, as he came away in fourth.

At 197 pounds, freshman Trey Dunning (Mishawaka, Ind.-Mishawaka) won on a 16-3 major decision over Carthage's Jared Werner to advance to the consolation semifinals. Dunning ultimately closed in sixth place. 

After dropping their opening round bouts, freshmen Silas Oberholtzer (Lake Barrington, Ill.-Barrington), Brady Mouser (Bloomington, Ill.-Tri-Valley), sophomores Lucas Blanton (Dixon, Ill.-Amboy) and Ameer Alamawi (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) bounced back with second match wins. Oberholtzer earned a 18-0 technical fall over CUW's Tyson Skubal. Mouser followed with a pin of Augustana's Jack Reina in 2:59, ultimately finishing sixth. Blanton booked a 7-2 decision over Millikin's Mason Clem. Alamawi secured a 19-3 technical fall against Elmhurst's Sammy Mendez.

Freshman Elijah Moore (Highland Park, Ill.-Highland Park) was Illinois Wesleyan's recipient of the CCIW RESPECT award. 

The Titans will take two weeks off before beginning the NCAA DIII Men's Wrestling Championships in the regional Friday-Saturday, Feb. 27-28, in Dubuque, Iowa.
