Johnston and Zvonar Advance to Day Two of Regionals

DUBUQUE, Iowa. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's wrestling team had two wrestlers advance to day two of the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Regional, hosted by Loras College. 

Freshman Tyson Zvonar (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) opened his day with a 9-1 pin (2:32) over Lyon College's Ty Ferguson. After dropping his quarterfinal bout to top-seeded Patrick Mullen of Wartburg, Zvonar defeated Westminister's Isaac Gawronski in the fourth consolation round via an 8-5 decision. Zvonar takes on Eli Sneed of Cornell College in tomorrow's fifth round of the consolation bracket at 133 pounds.

Junior Austin Johnston (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) bounced back after an opening round defeat with a pin in just 44 seconds over Westminister's Drake Schmidt. The pin marks Johnston's 50th win as a Titan. The 141-pounder earned his second pin of the event, this time in 5:38 over Cornell College's Dylan Heater. Johnston wrestles Nebraska Wesleyan's Robbie Fisher tomorrow in the fifth round of the consolation bracket.

Sophomores Ameer Alamawi (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) and Lucas Blanton (Dixon, Ill.-Amboy), along with freshman Trey Dunning (Mishawaka, Ind.-Mishawaka) also collected wins for the Titans.
