BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- The Illinois Wesleyan University men's wrestling team downed Eureka College 33-20, Sunday, Feb. 1 at the Shirk Center. With the win, Illinois Wesleyan climbs to 3-8 in duals, while Eureka slips to 2-2.
The Titans used wins at 133, 141, 174, 184, and 197 alongside a forfeit at 125 to top the Red Devils.
After freshman Brady Mouser (Bloomington, Ill.-Tri-Valley) had his hand raised for the opening bout forfeit, freshman
Tyson Zvonar (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) secured two first-period takedowns to keep momentum with the Green and White. Zvonar kept the pressure on en route to an early pin over Tristan Mosack at 2:32 for his fifth fall of the year.
Junior Austin Johnston (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) earned the third straight Illinois Wesleyan win in the 141-pound match. He led 10-5 at the end of two periods and ultimately won on an injury default.
Eureka snagged wins at 149, 157, and 165 to tighten the team score, 18-14, but the back half of IWU's lineup came through with some big wins to polish off the victory.
At 174 pounds, freshman Eli Moore (Highland Park, Ill.-Highland Park) scored two points to take a 2-1 lead before Maubach escaped with 30 seconds left, evening the score at 2-2. In sudden victory, the Highland Park, Ill. native booked a takedown to secure the bout, putting IWU up 21-14.
Sophomore Lucas Blanton (Dixon, Ill.-Amboy) secured a takedown with 1:13 remaining in the first period en-route to a pin at the 4:54 mark, which put the Titans ahead 27-14, clinching the dual.
Freshman Trey Dunning (Mishawaka, Ind.-Mishawaka) put together a strong match, racing out to a 5-0 lead over Patrick Fields. Dunning went ahead 3-0 at the end of the first and never looked back, finishing the Titans' scoring with a pin (4:31).
With the dual portion of the schedule complete, Illinois Wesleyan zeroes in on the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship. The league tournament is slated for Saturday, Feb. 14, at Tarble Arena on the campus of Carthage College.
