Men’s Golf Off to Strong Start at CCIW Championships

One day into the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships, it is the 13th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team that sits atop the nine-team standings. The Titans, led by three top-five showings, carded an opening round three-under 281 at the par-71, 6828-yard Whitetail Ridge Golf Club Thursday, May 4. 

In the first conference championship round of his career, freshman Jackson Hulsey (St. Charles, Ill.) fired a four-under 67. He currently holds medalist honors in the 43-player field, one stroke ahead of sophomore teammate Quinn Clifford (Chicago, Ill.-Brother Rice). Clifford recorded a three-under 68 in his CCIW Championship debut. Bobby Beaubien (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) is tied for fifth following a one-over 72. 

With freshman Juney Bai (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) and sophomore Griffin Pohl (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) tied for 11th and 20th, respectively, Illinois Wesleyan is the only team in the conference with three in the top-five and five in the top-20.

Behind the Titans, Carthage ranks in second. The Firebirds are 12 shots behind IWU following a 293, while Millikin is third with a 300.

Second round action is set for tomorrow, May 5. The round tees off beginning at 8 a.m., with Pohl set to get things rolling for Illinois Wesleyan at 9:20 a.m.
