Track and Field Concludes Day One of CCIW Outdoor Championships

11 Titans qualified for tomorrow’s track finals

WHEATON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's track and field teams took part in the first day of the highly anticipated College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Championships Friday, May 7 at McCully Stadium in Wheaton, Ill. on the campus of Wheaton College. After the end of day one, with two events scored, the women's team is in fifth place, with four points. The men's team sits tied for seventh place, with zero points.

For the women, junior Addison Bendery (Chicago, Ill.-Loyola Academy) qualified for the 100 meter and 200 meter finals after crossing the finish line with a times of 12.53 and 26.21, respectively to finish sixth in the qualifying round for both events. Senior Rebekah Harden (Tinley Park, Ill.-Lincoln-Way North) secured her spot in the 800 meter run finals by earning a time of 2:24.05, good for the fifth-fastest mark in qualifying.

Freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) had an impressive showing in the first four heptathlon events, highlighted by winning one event. Huber claimed first place in the shot put with a distance of 10.52 meters. The Lombard, Ill. native is currently in fourth place with 2246 points heading into tomorrow's action.

Senior Katie Vogler (Quincy, Ill.-Quincy) and freshman Tori Witzig (Gridley, Ill.-El Paso Gridley) both notched a lane in tomorrow's 400 meter hurdles with times of 1:08.32 and 1:10.87, respectively, good for third and seventh.

Earning four points for the Green and White, en route to a fifth-place finish in the 10k, senior Lexie Dorsey (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet Seymour) turned in a time of 38:34.50. 

On the men's side, junior Keondre Schumacher (Bloomington, Ill.-University High) enjoyed a personal-best mark, upping his fourth-fastest mark in IWU history as he sprinted for a time of 10.92 in the 100 meter sprint. Schumacher went on to win his heat, posting the fourth-fastest time in qualifying to qualify for the finals tomorrow. The Bloomington, Ill. native produced the fourth-fastest 200 meter mark in IWU history with a time of 22.28. His time earned him a spot in the finals and was good for the second-fastest qualifying time.

Sophomore Sam Morris (Elgin, Ill.-Harvest Christian Academy) earned a time of 51.63 in the 400 meter qualifying round, good for seventh to advance to tomorrow's finals. Freshman Ernie Waterson (Bloomington, Ill.-Cornerstone Chrisitan Academy) snagged the final position in the 800 meter final race tomorrow with his time of 1:56.43.

Freshman Alex Harvey (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) and junior Ethan Ruth (Winfield, Ill.-Hinsdale Central) both enjoyed top-eight finishes to solidify a spot in tomorrow's 400 meter hurdles with times of 57.86 and 58.49 which earned the sixth and eighth-fastest times, respectively.

Senior Davis Nguy (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) turned in a solid first half of the decathlon, which was highlighted by earning second in the 400 meters with a time of 54.14, and a tie for second in the high jump as he propelled himself to a distance of 1.69 meters. The Bloomington, Ill. native sits in third place with 2768 points after day one.

Junior J.D. Barrett (Tuscola. Ill.-Tuscola) turned in a personal-best time of 32:18.57 in the 10k, good for the fifth-fastest in IWU history as Barrett earned a 10th place finish. 

The Titans will continue with the CCIW Championships, tomorrow, May 7, with the first event starting at 9 a.m. in Wheaton, Ill. with the continuation of the decathlon.
