Three League Titles Highlight Day One of CCIW Championships

Crabtree sets meet record, Whitaker and Gonzalez win field events

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University track and field teams found success on day one of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships, claiming three individual championships Friday, May 1. The Titan women's squad leads the team championship with 31 points, while the men's team sits in fifth-place with 16 points. On the day, IWU earned 12 All-CCIW honors. 

Senior Adriana Crabtree (Normal, Ill.-University High) defended her crown in the 3000m steeplechase, securing her second straight title and third in her decorated career behind a time of 10:36.63 Crabtree bested the field by over 20 seconds and established a new meet record. Fellow senior Brooke Nazos (Batavia, Ill.-Batavia) smashed her personal-best time by 15 seconds en route to All-CCIW honors for the second consecutive season. Nazos' time of 11:43.60 was good for seventh-place. 

In his CCIW Championship debut, senior Gavin Gonzalez (Mattoon, Ill.-Mattoon) continued his dominant season with first-place in javelin. Gonzalez tossed a 58.27m mark on his second throw of the day to earn the win. 

Senior Isaac Whitaker (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) ended the night on a high note for the Titans, clearing a personal-best bar in the pole vault. Whitaker is just the third Titan all-time to earn an outdoor pole vault league title as he established a new career-best mark of 4.81m. Sophomore Sam Churchill (Seneca, Ill.-Seneca) joined Whitaker with All-CCIW honors in the event, clearing 4.35m for the first time in his career. The new personal-best landed him fifth-place and gave him sole possession of No. 8 on the program's top-10 in the event. 

Junior Carson Green (Centralia, Ill.-Centralia) recorded the first All-CCIW honor of the meet for the Titans, as he posted a third-place finish in the long jump. Green jumped 6.76m on his third attempt to secure all-conference status in the event for the third straight season. 

A trio of Titans secured All-CCIW honors in the women's javelin, led by a runner-up finish from senior Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East). French tossed 41.42m to collect the first all-conference honor of her track & field career in her first season of competition. Freshman Ashlyn Rager (Carmi, Ill.-Carmi-White Country) notched fifth-place behind a throw of 31.41m, and classmate Natalie Carter (St. Peters, Mo.-Fort Zumwalt East) used a personal-best 33.22m throw to finish seventh. 

Junior Imani Ogunribido (Hanover Park, Ill.-Lake Park) collected her first all-conference honor of the meet with a fourth-place finish in the long jump. The junior jumped 5.45m on her fourth attempt to add another  honor to her long list of awards. 

IWU rounded out the women's first day of awards, as senior Abby Quinn (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) and sophomore Maddie Morgan (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) finished fifth and six, respectively, in the 10,000m to earn All-CCIW honors. Quinn crossed in 38:39.80, shaving over a minute off her personal-best time. Morgan followed shortly after, finishing at 39:04.80.


Sophomore Kelsey Moore (Arcola, Ill.-Arcola) advanced to the finals in the 110m hurdles, using a personal-best time of 15.64 to finish sixth in prelims. Moore's time ties her 10th all-time in the event, as she matches Jill Essington's mark set in 1997. Senior Bobby Mogged (Piper City, Ill.-Tri-Point) also snagged a spot in the 110m hurdles final, as he posted a personal-best time of 15.25 to come in seventh during prelims. 

Senior Bella Gonzalez (Itasca, Ill.-Lake Park) had to wait out her chance at making the 400m final, as her time of 59.60 in the first of four heats snuck in to steal the last spot in the final. 

The duo of Ogunribido and junior Olivia Skibinski (Peoria, Ill.-Richwoods) will represent the Titans in the 100m finals. Ogunribido secured her spot in the final after crossing the finish line at 12.33 to win her heat and establish a new personal-best time. Skibinski used a time of 12.56 to lock in her finals spot for the second season in a row with a time of 12.56. Skibinski also advanced to the 200m final, as she ran 25.99 in the prelims to finish sixth.

Junior Mackenzie Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) topped the field in the 800m prelims, crossing at 2:19.38 to secure her spot in the final for the second straight season.

Freshman Corrina Fassino (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) advanced to her first final event, as she finished fifth in the 400m hurdles prelims with a time of 1:07.67. 

Senior Evan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) punched his ticket to the 400m finals after winning his heat with a time of 47.40, the best in the prelims by over one second. Lowder looks to defend his title, as he has taken the crown in the event the last two championships. Sophomore Alex Maas (Heyworth, Ill.-Heyworth) also secured a spot in the 400m final to join his teammate, as his personal-best time of 49.63 seeds him seventh. The mark pushes Maas into eighth all-time in program history.

The Green and White will be well represented in the 100m final, as three Titans secured a top-eight finish in the prelims. Freshman Cameron Rask (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) won his heat with a time of 10.91, the third-fastest in prelims. Junior Cole Marshall (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet Seymour) clocked in at 10.95 to finish seventh, and sophomore Nyamedze Maison (Groveland, Ill.-Morton) crossed at 10.99 to take the eighth and final spot.

Illinois Wesleyan put three in the 800m final, led by a third-place finish in prelims by sophomore Jacob Pinkston (Tinley Park, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East). Pinkston won his heat with a time of 1:56.60 to secure an automatic spot. Junior Aidan Nishimura (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Hersey) used a personal-best time of 1:56.46 to advance with the sixth-best time, while senior Seth Hamerski (Mount Vernon, Ill.-Webber) followed in seventh, crossing quickly after his teammate at 1:56.82.

The 200m final will also feature a trio of Titans. Green won his heat with a time of 22.49 to punch his ticket with the fifth-fastest mark in the field. Junior Noah Sadowski (Burr Ridge, Ill.-Hinsdale South) and Marshall finished in seventh and eighth, respectively, to join Green in the final. Sadowski came in at 22.54, while Marshall closely followed at 22.57. 

The first event of Championship Saturday, May 2 for the Titans will be women's shot put at 10:30 a.m.
