Men’s Cross Country and Track and Field Pulls in Six CSC Academic All-District Honors

Titans record most honorees in program history, tie for nation-lead

GREENWOOD, Ind. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's cross country and track and field teams had six student-athletes named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team, announced by the organization Tuesday, June 23. It is the most honorees in program history, tying the Titans for the most nationally.

Seniors Gavin Gonzalez (Mattoon, Ill.-Mattoon), Bobby Mogged (Piper City, Ill.-Tri-Point), Zach Marquardt (Minneapolis, Minn.-Washburn), and Seth Hamerski (Mount Vernon, Ill.-Webber), along with sophomores Alex Maas (Heyworth, Ill.-Heyworth) and Jacob Pinkston (Tinley Park, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) represented the Green and White on the academic all-district team. 

Gonzalez, who graduated with a degree in nursing behind a 3.76 GPA, earns the honor for the first time in his career after a record-breaking season. The Mattoon, Ill. native broke the school record in the javelin behind a personal-best throw of 60.87m. Gonzalez earned College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Champion status, as he won the javelin event at the outdoor championship with a heave of 58.27m. The senior sat second regionally in the event according to TFFRS, and was ranked 26th nationally, with a mark of 60.87m (199'8"). Gonzalez earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country All-Region honors in the javelin, and was named the CCIW Field Athlete of the Week April 15, 2026, after shattering the program record.

Mogged collects his second consecutive academic all-district accolade after finishing his career with a 3.54 GPA. The Piper City, Ill. native sat within the top-50 regionally in the indoor 60m hurdles and outdoor 110m hurdles. His time of 8.55 in the 60m hurdles ranked 36th regionally, while his season-best time of 15.25 in the 110m hurdles was good for 29th in the midwest. Mogged notched two All-CCIW honors this season, as he finished eighth in the 60m hurdles at the indoor conference championship, and followed with a fourth-place effort in the 100m hurdle event at the outdoor conference meet. 

Finishing his degree in accounting with a 3.95 GPA, Marquardt tallied his first CSC Academic All-District distinction in his final year as a Titan. A member of both the cross country and track and field squads, Marquardt saved his best season for last, as he earned his first USTFCCCA All-Region honor after being a part of the distance medley relay during indoor season. The Titan DMR squad finished second at the CCIW indoor championship behind a time of 10:10.13 to earn all-conference honors, while the mark ranked seventh in the midwest. In the 3,000m steeplechase, Marquardt posted a personal-best time of 9:49.23 during the outdoor conference championship meet, seeding him 26th regionally. 

Also a member of both the cross country and track and field teams, Hamerski adds to the list of first time honorees. The senior finished his career with a 3.51 GPA in economics to earn his first honor from CSC. Hamerski joined Marquardt on the regionally-ranked DMR squad, and added two individual rankings during the outdoor season. His time of 3:59.62 in the 1500m was good for 44th in the midwest region, while he ranked 46th in the 800m after clocking in at 1:56.82. Along with All-CCIW honors in the DMR, Hamerski finished sixth in the indoor 800m before completing his career with two all-conference accolades at the outdoor CCIW meet. The senior registered an eighth-place finish in the 800m, and completed his career with a third-place effort in the 1500m.

Maas put together a strong sophomore campaign that saw him rank within the top-50 in six events. As a member of the 4x400m indoor relay, Maas helped his squad to a time of 3:18.74, ranking fifth in the midwest region. The Heyworth, Ill. native was also a member of the DMR squad that posted the seventh-fastest time regionally, and added an individual ranking in the indoor 400m. His time of 50.12 saw him rank 39th regionally in the event. In the outdoor, Maas notched two individual rankings to go along with a relay top-50 time. As a member of the 4x400 outdoor relay, Maas and his team posted the fifth-best time in the midwest, and 45th nationally, behind a 3:14.18 effort. In the outdoor 400m, he ranked 17th regionally after crossing the finish line at 48.97, while his time of 21.91 in the 200m was good for 31st. He was a member of the indoor and outdoor 4x400 relay squads, both of which won CCIW titles and earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors. Maas also added all-conference performances in the indoor 400m (seventh), DMR (second), and outdoor 400m (fourth). The sophomore holds a 3.75 GPA in kinesiology and allied health.

Rounding out the honorees, Pinkston earned his first academic honor after a solid sophomore season. Pinkston swept the 800m event at the CCIW indoor and outdoor championships, while adding an All-CCIW performance in the DMR. His time of 1:52.62 in the outdoor 800m ranked eighth in the midwest region, while he finished 13th regionally in the event indoors behind a 1:54.06 effort. Pinkston was also a member of the DMR squad that ranked seventh regionally after clocking in at 10:10.13 to finish runner-up at the indoor conference championship. Pinkston earned his first career USTFCCCA All-Region honor as part of the DMR, and followed with his first individual accolade in the outdoor 800m. The Tinley Park, Ill. native is also a member of IWU's cross country squad. Pinkston boasts a 3.89 GPA in accounting. 

The six nominees mark the most in program history, with Maas and Pinkston set to return for the 2026-27 campaign.
