Ayana Blair Sets New IWU Shot Put Record at CCIW Indoor Championships

Women’s team finished second, men placed seventh

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up competition at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday, Feb. 29. The women's team finished in second with 101 points placing only behind North Central, who had 152 to claim the women's title. On the men's side, they placed seventh with 27 points as North Central also took the men's title with 204 points. 

It was a record-setting day for junior Ayana Blair (Wheeling, Ill.-Wheeling HS) in the women's shot put as she recorded a distance 44' 9.5" to take third place in the women's shot put event. Her previous personal best of 44' 3.5" was tied with Karly Goodman for the indoor school record. Senior Angela Roman (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect HS) finished fifth with a distance of 40' 9" in the same event.

In the women's triple jump, junior Nia Lee (Romeoville, Ill-Romeoville HS) claimed third with a distance of 35' 6.5" while freshman Kinlee Miller (Tuscola, Ill.-Tuscola HS) took sixth at 35' 0.5".

On the track, freshman Addison Bendery (Chicago, Ill.-Loyola Academy HS) posted a second-place finish in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.867 after running a season-best 7.85 in the preliminary round. She also came in fifth at the 200 meter dash, finishing at 26.14 for her second top-five finish of the day.

The women's 3000 meter run featured a trio of top-eight finishers, with junior Katie North (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley HS) coming in second at 10:36.10, sophomore Jenna Mirande (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone HS) placing sixth with a run of 10:47.63, and fellow sophomore Lexie Dorsey (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet-Seymour HS) managing an eighth place finish with a time of 10:55.11. Junior Kelsey Wyman (Monmouth, Ill.-Monmouth-Roseville) placed runner-up in the 800 meter run, finishing at 2:19.86.

For the men, junior Jake Mahaffey (Plainfield, Ill.-Providence Catholic HS) was fourth in the triple jump (44' 9") and eighth in the high jump (6' 1.25") in posting a pair of top-eight finishes for the day. Freshman Drew Tatlock (North Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community HS) also placed eighth with Mahaffey in the high jump at 6' 1.25".

Sophomore Cole Paraday (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East HS) was fifth in the shot put, posting a distance of 48' 10.75" while fellow sophomore Davis Nguy (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community HS) was sixth in the heptathlon, scoring 3859 points over the two-day event.

On the track, senior Steven Raybould (Hometown, Ill.-Oak Lawn HS) in the 5000 meter run finished at 8:54.63 to claim eighth place.

Illinois Wesleyan will return to action next weekend, where they will be present for two meets in the Carthage Final Qualifier, Friday, Mar. 6 starting at 3 p.m. and the Wartburg Qualifier, Saturday, Mar. 7 beginning at 10 a.m.
