BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Junior
Katie North (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley HS) captured the women's 5000 meter run title to lead the Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's track and field teams in the first day of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Track and Field Championships, Friday, Feb. 28, inside the Shirk Center fieldhouse.Â
In the team standings, the women are tied for first with North Central College with 44 points apiece, while the men's team sit tied with North Park University for seventh place with a total of 9 points.
North posted a time of 18:14.79, topping her previous career-best mark by almost 24 seconds and won by 16 seconds over the following competitor. North's finish clinched her the CCIW Championship title. In the same event, sophomores Lexie Dorsey (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet-Seymour HS) and
Kayleigh Pitterman (Glenview, Ill.-Glenbrook South HS) finished fourth and sixth with season-best times of 18:37.67 and 18:45.60. Senior
Steven Raybould (Hometown, Ill.-Oak Lawn HS) in the men's 5000 meter run placed seventh with a time of 15:20.35, improving his best time by 16 seconds.
The women's long jump featured a trio of top-six finishes by junior Cora Wilkinson (Verona, Ill.-Seneca Township HS), who took third at 18' 1", fellow junior
Nia Lee (Romeoville, Ill.-Romeoville HS), placing fourth at 17' 11.5", and sophomore
Emma Helferich (Monticello, Ill.-Monticello HS), finishing sixth at 17' 4".
Senior Colin Orchard (Lindenhurst, Ill.-Lakes Community HS) recorded a season-best distance of 54' 11.25" to finish in third in the women's weight throw. The women's throwing duo of junior
Ayana Blair (Wheeling, Ill.-Wheeling HS) and senior
Angela Roman (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect HS) placed in seventh and eighth with throws of 50' 11" and 50' 9.25".
In the women's pentathlon, sophomore Katie Vogler (Quincy, Ill.-Quincy HS) finished with 2548 points to finish in fifth place.
Both the men's and women's track and field teams will return to action tomorrow for the final day of the CCIW Championships Saturday, Feb. 29. The first event will kick off at 11 a.m.
