2011 All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Baseball Teams
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan sophomore
Kevin Callahan was named the top player and, for the second year in a row, senior
Jason Pankau has been chosen as the top pitcher in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Callahan and Pankau were named to the first team of the all-conference squads along with freshman designated hitter
Bobby Czarnowski and junior righthanded pitcher
Joe Sweeney.
Sophomore lefthanded pitcher
Nick Mehn was a second team selection.
Callahan (Chicago, Brother Rice HS), who shared the award with Carthage centerfielder Will Hodges, was third in the CCIW with a .419 batting average, led the CCIW with eight home runs and tied for the league lead with 24 runs batted in. His on-base percentage of .542 led the conference as did his .784 slugging percentage.
Callahan is the first player of the year in the CCIW for the Titans since second baseman Ricky Angel in 2007 and is the seventh IWU player to earn the league's top honor, following pitcher Cory Lapinski (2005), pitcher Steve Schilsky (2001), pitcher Nathan Knuffman (1998), catcher
Mike Brown (1991) and outfielder James Shaw (1980).
Pankau (Elmhurst, Ill., York HS), who was the co-winner of the honor in 2010, gives IWU the league's top pitching award for the fourth time in the last five seasons -
Brent Kulavic was the winner in 2008 and Matt Aronson was the 2007 winner.
Pankau, who earned second team all-league honors in 2009 and was first team in 2010, was 5-1 with a league-best 1.22 earned run average. He also led the CCIW with 50 strikeouts and 51 2/3 innings pitched and walked only three hitters.
Czarnowski (Naperville, Ill., Central HS) batted .346 with four homers, two triples and 16 runs batted in. He had a .430 on-base percentage and a .551 slugging percentage.
Sweeney (Chicago, Fenwick HS) was fourth in the CCIW with a 2.53 earned run average and had a 4-2 record in conference play. He tossed a nine-inning no-hitter against North Central on May 7 and, for the season, he struck out 30 in 46 1/3 innings.
Mehn (Peoria, Ill., Bartonville Limestone HS) tied with Pankau for the CCIW lead with five wins and was 5-1 with a 5.15 ERA. He struck out 20 in 36 2/3 innings.
The Titans, who were the regular season CCIW champions with a 15-6 record, finished 28-18 overall and played in the NCAA Division III tournament for the second straight season and the ninth time overall.
