BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Former Illinois Wesleyan University baseball pitcher Alex Tosi found himself calling balls and strikes Saturday Oct. 4, as he was behind the plate for game one of the American League Division Series, umpiring the Major League Baseball series between the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners. Tosi, a 2010 alumnus of IWU, was part of the 2010 NCAA Division III National Championship team as a senior.

The finance major received his call to the big leagues as an umpire in 2019, making his debut May 11 in Minneapolis, Minn. at Target Field, in a matchup between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins.

Nowadays in 2025, Tosi sports the number 66 and is a part of Ron Kulpa's umpiring crew, alongside Cory Blaser and Manny Gonzales.

In his time as a Titan, the Peoria, Ill. native, pitched four years (2007-10) to the tune of a 4.57 career ERA. His best season came in 2009 when he went 4-0 in 11 appearances, starting seven of them, and knotting a save. His 3.02 ERA that season was good enough for fourth on the team.

Kulpa and his crew will complete the best-of-five ALDS between the Tigers and Mariners with the series knotted at one apiece. First pitch of game three in the series will begin at 4:08 p.m. ET Tuesday, Oct. 7 in Detroit, Mich.
