Mt. Vernon, Iowa. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's wrestling team had five wrestlers place at the Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invitational, Saturday, January 17 at Cornell College.
Freshman Kennedy Murray (Evanston, Ill.- Evanston) finished in second place at 160 pounds. In her first collegiate competition at 160, Murray needed just 45 seconds to pin Annsleigh Alexander of Central Methodist. In her quarterfinal bout, the Evanston, Ill. native got her second straight pin, this time in 57 seconds against Luther's Kylie Miller. Murray scored with four seconds to spare in her semifinal match against Buena Vista's Destiny Kolheim to earn the tiebreaker in order to advance on a 3-3 decision to the championship bout, where Murray was defeated by Northern Michigan's Sophia Bassino, who is ranked seventh nationally.
In just her second event at 145 pounds, freshman Jillian Giller (Wilmette, Ill.-New Trier) won her first bout over Augsburg's Elise Ashland via a 11-0 technical fall. After being defeated by second-ranked Reese Larramendy of Iowa, Giller bounced back with a 8-4 decision over Cornell's Graciela Juarez. After dropping her consolation semifinal bout, Giller fell to Augsburg's Hannah Wigern to earn eighth place.
After dropping her second round match following a bye, freshman Angel Hill (San Diego, Calif.-Mira Mesa) pinned Northern Michigan's Mickaela Keane in 4:51. The 207-pounder then earned a 10-0 technical fall over Augsburg's Sonia Ramos. In the consolation semifinals, Hill pinned Iowa's Libby Dix in 2:30 to advance to the third place match.
Freshman Alivia Davey (Ripon, Wis.-Berlin) earned a bye in the first round before dropping a 2-1 decision to Iowa's Libby Dix. In her first consolation bout, Davey earned a 10-0 technical fall over Buena Vista's Alannah Peterson. The 207-pounder followed with a 4-0 decision over Wartburg's Elizabeth Kalinay to advance to the third place bout. In the third place match at 207 pounds, Davey defeated Hill via a 8-1 decision.
At 103 pounds, Leslie Guzman (Fort Worth, Texas.-South Hills) won her last bout of the tournament against Augsburg's Chelsea Beaver via a 8-0 decision to claim seventh place.
The Titans next competition is Sunday, Jan. 25 at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships hosted by Elmhurst University.
