Men’s Soccer Prepares for Final Non-Conference Match

Titans welcome Wabash to Neis Field

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team will wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule against Wabash College Saturday, Sept. 27 at Neis Field. Kick off is scheduled for 3:30.

Illinois Wesleyan most recently defeated Eureka College, 3-0, and enters the match 5-1-2. On their own turf, the Titans are 1-1-1.

On its way to its second shutout of the year, IWU capitalized on a pair of goals in the first period against the Red Devils. Sophomore Gavin Young (Bloomington, Ill-Central Catholic) recorded his first collegiate goal in the 39th minute. It happened off a throw in which was headed, and in the scrum of players found the foot of Young who kissed it off the far post. 

Still in the first period, senior Logan Tierney (Bloomington, Ill- Normal Community) went short side top shelf on the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. With time dwindling down, the Titans tacked one more on when junior Faheem Mujahid (Saint Robert, Mo.-Waynesville) scored a goal in the 84th minute to collect his third point of the match. 

Illinois Wesleyan's defense has clogged up opposing offenses and has held opponents to one goal or less in the last five matches. In his senior season, goalkeeper Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill-Cary Grove) has recorded 21 saves to the tune of a .750 save percentage. He recorded a season-high, six saves Wednesday, Sept. 17 against Illinois College.

In its last five matches Wabash owns a 1-4 record, victorious its last time out against Adrian College. Overall, it enters with a 4-5 record, and is 1-4 on the road. 

Dating back to 1990, Illinois Wesleyan and Wabash have met six times with the Little Giants leading the series, 3-0-3. Saturday's match marks the fourth consecutive season the two have met and have ended with a 1-1 draw in each of them.

The match will serve as the the annual Titans vs Cancer game in part with the Pediatric Brain Foundation. Saturday's match is in honor of children and teens who have experienced a pediatric brain tumor or cancer diagnoses.
