Box Score EUREKA, Ill.- The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team got back in the win column Wednesday, Sept 24, with a commanding 3-0 victory over Eureka College at McKinzie Field. Illinois Wesleyan improves to 5-1-2 overall and a perfect 5-0-0 away from Neis Field. Eureka idles at 4-6-2 as it looks ahead to St. Louis Intercollegiate Conference play.
Illinois Wesleyan struck first in the 39th minute off a set play on a throw in. Freshman Hunter Reinberg (Washington, Mo.-St. Francis Borgia) delivered the over the head pass that was knocked in the air and headed by junior
Faheem Mujahid (Saint Robert, Mo.-Waynesville) which settled on the foot of sophomore
Gavin Young (Bloomington, Ill-Central Catholic) who kissed it off the far post to score his first collegiate goal.
Just three minutes after the first score, IWU tacked on another. This time, it was freshman Colby Thomas (O'fallon, Mo.- Fort Zumwalt North) who had a breakaway in the center of the pitch and delivered a beautiful pass to senior
Logan Tierney (Bloomington, Ill- Normal Community), who went short side and found the top right corner of the goal.
For the remainder of the first half and well into the second period the score stood 2-0, until the 84th minute when Mujahid collected his game-leading third point of the game. It was a pass from junior Ryder Coleman (Bannockburn, Ill-Deerfield) that dished to Mujahid, who steadied the ball and scooted it on the ground past the goalkeeper.
Once again, the Titan defense stood tall, earning its second shutout of the season and has held opponents to one goal or less in the last five matches. The Maroon and Gold attempted 13 shots and landed just three on goal all coming in the second period as the IWU defense disrupted the Red Devils all match.
An aggressive offensive attack led to 32 shots by IWU, the most since Sept. 5, 2012 against Monmouth when it tallied the same number. The hostile attack landed 12 shots on goal.
Illinois Wesleyan resumes action Saturday, Sept. 27, for its last non-conference match of the year with Wabash College visiting Bloomington. The two will face off after the women's match with kickoff set for 3:30 at Neis Field.
