Cross Country Leads Way at Titan Opener

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's cross country teams got the 2025 season started strong Friday evening, Aug. 29, with a dominant showing at the Titan Opener. IWU claimed both team titles in the small field, with seniors Adriana Crabtree (Normal, Ill.-University High) and Seth Hamerski (Mount Vernon, Ill.-Webber) picking up individual victories.

Crabtree headlined a women's team performance that saw the Green and White take 14 of the top 16 finishes. Crabtree crossed the finish line of the two-mile race in 12:21.30, the first of seven straight IWU harriers. It marked the second win of her career.

Freshman Alexia Spatz (Spring Grove, Ill.-Richmond Burton) took second followed by seniors Abby Quinn (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) and Brooke Nazos (Batavia, Ill.-Batavia). Sophomore Taylor Fleury (Algonquin, Ill.-Dundee-Crown), freshman Emma Somenek (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Elk Grove), and senior Ella Revell-Beck (Davenport, Iowa-Davenport Central) placed fifth through seventh, respectively.

Hamerski, who collected his first collegiate win, closed a three-mile time of 16:02.50 and led a one-two punch for the Green and White. Senior Zach Marquardt (Minneapolis, Minn.-Washburn) crossed the finish line just 10 seconds later, clocking a 16:12.40.

Also finishing in the top-eight on the men's side were sophomores Jack Thomas (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), Carson Davis (Mt. Zion, Ill.-Mt. Zion), and Jacob Pinkston (Tinley Park, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) as the trio took fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

Illinois Wesleyan takes a week off before racing in the Redbird Invite Friday, Sept. 12. The meet hosted by NCAA Division I neighbor Illinois State University is set to get underway at 5 p.m. at Weibring Golf Course.
