Track and Field Claims Three Titles on Day One of CCIW Championships

Day two to kick off at 9:30 a.m.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's track and field teams had an impressive first day at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships, Friday, May 2, with a combined 14 All-CCIW performances and three individual titles on the women's side. Both Titan squads sit third in team standings heading into day two, Saturday, May 3. 

The IWU men totaled 37.5 points on the opening day while the women scored 37. North Central leads on both sides with the NCC men scoring 59 points and women totaling 44. Augustana is second in the men's team standings at 42 points and Elmhurst is second on the women's side with 41. 

Senior Carlyssa King (Decatur, Ill.-Forsyth-Maroa) was crowned the CCIW Champion in the women's hammer throw, taking the top spot with her second throw of the day, a 53.42m (175'3") toss, and held strong through finals for the win. 

Junior Adriana Crabtree (Normal, Ill.-University High) made her long-awaited return to the 3000m steeplechase on Friday, leading from start to finish and claiming the CCIW crown in a time of 10:45.97. Crabtree's effort ranks ninth in Division III this season.

After settling into second for much of the women's 10,000m, senior Annalese Chudy (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) passed Wheaton's Sophia Huber with four laps to go and quickly pulled away. Crossing the finish line with a 10-second cushion, Chudy earned her first 10k conference crown in a time of 37:12.45. In the final lap, junior Abby Quinn (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) ran down a North Central runner to finish eighth in 40:15.00 to earn All-CCIW honors. 

Senior CJ Ladewig (Palos Heights, Ill.-Stagg) threw a 50.94m (167'2") mark in the preliminary round of the men's hammer throw to earn his spot in the finals. Ladewig ultimately finished fourth with a mark of 53.06m (174'1"). Senior Sam Hea (Quincy, Ill.-Quincy Notre Dame) put on a performance in the hammer throw, capping off his career with a personal-best mark of 45.56m (149'6") to finish 13th overall in the field. Hea cracked the program's top-10 list in the event at No. 9.

Junior Isaac Whitaker (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) claimed runner-up All-CCIW honors in the men's pole vault with a season-best clearance of 4.65m (15'3") while freshman teammate Sam Churchill (Seneca, Ill.-Seneca) notched a tie for fourth in the event with a 4.15m (13'7.25") mark. 

Sophomore Carson Green (Centralia, Ill.-Centralia) claimed a pair of All-CCIW honors on Friday, beginning with the javelin throw where his toss of 48.15m (157'11") earned him an eighth-place finish before rallying for a runner-up finish in the men's long jump with a 6.88m (22'7") leap. Green broke into the program top-10 in both events, sitting seventh in the javelin and ninth in the long jump.

In total, the Titans had four in the men's long jump final as freshman Nick Walker (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora) finished just behind Green in third with a 6.83m (22'5") jump. Junior Jahari Scott (Lake Bluff, Ill.-Lake Forest) was fifth (6.81m, 22'4.25"), and senior Brooks Johnson (Elburn, Ill.-Kaneland) finished seventh (6.62m 21'8.75") as all four claimed all-conference accolades. 

Scott and freshman Nyamedze Maison (Groveland, Ill.-Morton) posted the fifth (10.88) and eighth-fastest (10.99) times out of the 100m preliminary round to qualify for tomorrow's final. Maison's time is a personal-best for the freshman and ties for ninth in program history. On the women's side, sophomore Olivia Skibinski (Peoria, Ill.-Richwoods) snuck into the 100m finals with a 12.42-second time as she sits seventh in the field.

Both women's senior javelin throwers, Caitlin McCane (Bloomington, Ill.-Tri-Valley) and Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) produced All-CCIW performances with McCane finishing fifth (36.42m, 119'6") and Huber in seventh (35.04m, 114'11"). 

Senior Alex Harvey (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) will carry the fastest 400m hurdle time into the finals as he clocked a 54.43-second run, a personal-best for the senior and a time that ranks second-best in IWU laurels. Sophomore Luke Alberstett (Roscoe, Ill.-Hononegah Community) will join Harvey in the finals after posting a 58.62-second time to sit seventh in the field. Freshman Kelsey Moore (Arcola, Ill.-Arcola) will also advance in the women's 400m hurdles as her 1:07.89 time snagged the last spot in the finals. 

A trio of Titans earned spots in tomorrow's men's 110m hurdles after posting top-eight times in the preliminary round. Harvey posted the third-fastest time in the trials with a 15.14-second effort, a time that ranks eighth all-time for IWU. Freshman Kamden Reynolds (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) finished sixth in 15.33 seconds and ranks 10th in program history. Senior Bobby Mogged (Piper City, Ill.-Tri-Point) snagged the eighth and final spot in tomorrow's final with a 15.55-second time.

The IWU men also have three advancing to tomorrow's 400m final, led by junior Evan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) who turned in the fastest time in the field of 48.37 seconds. Sophomore Reece Dusek (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) has the third fastest time out of prelims at 49.10 while sophomore Noah Sadowski (Burr Ridge, Ill.-Hinsdale) landed the last spot in finals with a 50.27 effort. Dusek also earned a spot in the 200m finals after posting the fourth-fastest time in the field of 21.99 seconds. 

In the women's 400m, junior Bella Gonzalez (Itasca, Ill.-Lake Park) will take the seventh seed in tomorrow's final after posting a 58.60 effort. 

Senior Ernie Waterson (Bloomington, Ill.-Cornerstone Christian Academy) turned in the top time in the 800m prelims of 1:53.55 and heads into tomorrow's final alongside freshman Jacob Pinkston (Tinley Park, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) who clocked a 1:55.89 as the third-fastest time in the field and sophomore Aidan Nishimura (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Hersey) who won his heat and sits seventh overall with a time of 1:56.59. 

IWU went 2-3-4 in the women's 800m led by sophomore Alex Reinhart's (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) 2:17.26 time followed by the sister duo of sophomore Mackenzie Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard West) and Lauren Huber who crossed the finish line together in 2:18.41 and 2:18.72, respectively.

Day two of the CCIW Championships will kick off at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, inside North Central's Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
