Clifford and Pohl Go 1-2 as Titans Claim Victory in Decatur

Titans top 20-team field for fourth win of the year

DECATUR, Ill. - Seniors Quinn Clifford (Chicago, Ill.-Brother Rice) and Griffin Pohl (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) propelled the fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team to its fourth win of the year Saturday, April 26, as the Titans topped the 20-team field at the Take Back the Night Challenge. IWU fired a final round 285 on the par-70, 6364-yard South Side Country Club to best the field by a five-stroke margin.

Clifford snagged his fourth career victory, finishing the tournament seven-under par. He recorded a three-under 67 in the final round of the event to finish at 135. Pohl took second-place at 140 (64-76). 

The duo led a showing that saw six Titans place in the top-25 of the 115-player event. Freshman Pablo Castro (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine), the top finisher on IWU's 'B' team, grabbed a share of fifth as he went one-under on the day to go even for the tournament (142). Junior Michael Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill.-Hinsdale Central) tied for 13th (143) and junior Aidan Healy's (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way West) 144 earned a share of 18th. Junior Juney Bai (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) tied for 21st (145).

Illinois Wesleyan earned the win with a 36-hole total of 559, while 18th-ranked UW-Eau Claire placed second (564). Calvin took third (580), just slightly edging out Mississippi College for Women (581). IWU's 'B' team climbed into the top-five, placing fifth with a score of 586.

The Green and White now looks ahead to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship, set for May 1-3, at WeaverRidge in Peoria, Ill.
