BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team will kick off its spring break trip in Maryland with a game at McDaniel College Sunday, March 9. IWU (3-2) will face the Green Terror (3-2) at 12 p.m. ET inside Kenneth R. Gill Stadium.
The Titans enter the east coast trip off a loss to University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, dropping the contest 16-4 Thursday, March 6. Senior
Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) led the team with three points, all coming by way of goals. Fiandaca also led the squad with five ground balls and five draw controls. Freshman
Brooke Ayres (Sun Prairie, Wis.-Sun Prairie East) posted a career-high five caused turnovers to lead the defense. Senior
Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) logged all 60 minutes in goal, making nine saves.
Fiandaca's 15 points on 15 goals are both team-highs entering the trip. Senior
Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) follows with 14 points, composed of 11 goals and three assists, and junior
Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) closely follows with 13 points via nine goals and four assists. Freshman
Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) and juniors
Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and
Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) sit atop of the team with five assists apiece.
At the draw, Fiandaca and Newton lead the way with 25 and 21 draw controls, respectively. Setzler is third on the team with seven. The trio also leads the team in ground balls. Fiandaca's 30 ground balls are a team-best, followed by 21 from Setzler, and Newton's 17. Fiandaca sits 11th nationally in ground balls per game with an average of six.
Defensively, Fiandaca also leads the team with 31 caused turnovers, and holds the second-best average in Division III, as the senior is averaging 6.20 forced errors per game. Newton and Ayres follow with 11 caused turnovers each. IWU ranks fifth among Division III with an average of 18.60 caused turnovers per contest. Rymarcsuk has led the team in goal, posting 28 saves on a .418 save percentage in 270 minutes between the posts. The senior enters the weekend with an 8.67 goals against average and a 3-2 record.
IWU will meet McDaniel on the field for the first time in program history. The Green Terrors enter the game off a 9-7 loss to Juniata College Wednesday, March 5.
