Women’s Lacrosse Sweeps CCIW Player of the Week Honors

Newton named offensive, Rymarcsuk collects defensive award

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - For the first time since March 19, 2024, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team swept the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Week honors. The league announced junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) as the offensive player of the week, while senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) was named the defensive recipient.

After leading the Titans to a 2-1 week, the duo earns the first weekly award sweep of head coach Abby Kushina's career, and joins senior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) on the list of Titans to receive the honor this season. Fiandaca reeled in defensive player of the week honors March 4. This marks the first weekly award of Newton's career, while Rymarcsuk collects her second. The goalkeeper's first honor came back on April 4, 2023.

In three games throughout the week, Newton recorded nine goals, an average of three per game, three assists, and 12 points, averaging four points per game. She also added 17 draw controls, an average of 5.67 per contest, eight ground balls, and two caused turnovers. 

At Calvin University Wednesday, March 19, Newton finished with a team-best two goals, along with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. The junior followed up with a career day at Augsburg University Saturday, March 22, as she finished with a career-high eight points, composed of six goals and two assists, along with eight draw controls, one ground ball, and a caused turnover, leading the Titans to a 21-3 win. Finishing the week with a 9-6 win at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Newton posted two points, as well as six draw controls, four ground balls, and a caused turnover. 

Rymarcsuk collected two wins in goal for the Green and White during the three-game stretch. For the week, Rymarcsuk totaled 33 saves, an average of 11 per game, recording a .569 save percentage, as well as eight ground balls and a caused turnover. 

The senior opened the week with 20 saves at Calvin, finishing one shy of her career-best, along with scooping up six ground balls. Rymarcsuk followed with two saves in the 21-3 win at Augsburg. In the final game of the week, the Lake Zurich, Ill. native recorded 11 saves, two ground balls, and a caused turnover in the 9-6 victory at UW-Stevens Point.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to action at DePauw University Wednesday, March 26. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
