JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. & NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Griffin Pohl (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) leads the field after 18 holes at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational at Pine Lakes Golf Club Friday, March 21. The fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team holds a four-stroke lead following an opening round 284 on the par-72, 6700-yard course.
Pohl carded a six-under 66 out of the gate to stand atop the 150-player field. The senior tallied five birdies and eagled the 18th-hole to sit tied for first.
Junior Michael Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill.-Hinsdale Central) and freshman Pablo Castro (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) posted even par 72s and sit tied for 16th.
Illinois Wesleyan leads the 30-team field at 284. Emory sits second with a score of 288, while Sewanee and Amherst are tied for third at 289.
In the individual tournament, junior Juney Bai (Mokena, Ill.-Licoln-Way Central) carries a three-stroke lead into day two. Bai went three-under for the round, firing a 69.

The Golf Coaches Association of America announced the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll Friday morning, March 21, with the Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team holding steady at fourth with 389 points.
The top-25 rankings saw a flip at the No.1 and No. 2 positions, with Methodist reeling in 15 first-place votes and 447 points to top the poll. Washington & Lee, which received three first-place votes, dipped to second. Sewanee climbed up to third with 398 points, while Emory (388) is just behind IWU in fifth.
Illinois Wesleyan, which returned to action at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational today, March 21, has not competed since the fall. IWU has won two tournaments on the season thus far, besting the field at the Heartland Invite and the Wabash Invite. The Green and White placed runner up at the NCAA Division III Preview and fourth in a loaded field at the Folds of Honor.
