Wrestling Set for Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invitational

Both IWU men and women to compete in Mount Vernon, Iowa

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – After a week of duals, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's wrestling programs will hit the road to Mount Vernon, Iowa, for the Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invitational Saturday, Jan. 18. Hosted by Cornell College, opening bouts are set for 9 a.m. at the Small Athletic and Wellness Center. 

IWU's men are coming off a three-dual week having slipped to Carthage, 41-14, and MSOE, 42-10, Monday, Jan. 6, and Eureka 40-17, Friday, Jan. 10. 

Freshman Evan Carel (Hamilton, Ill.-Hamilton) had a standout week for the Titans. After moving up to 157 pounds at the start of the week, Carel went 3-0 in duals with a major decision, a tech fall, and a pin. Freshman Lucas Blanton (Dixon, Ill.-Amboy) picked up his first collegiate win against Eureka with a pin. Also picking up wins in the Carthage dual were sophomore Austin Johnston (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) on a tech fall and freshman Ameer Alamawi (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) with a decision. 

On the women's side, freshman Sifa Feruzi (Denver, Colo.-Macomb Senior) was the sole IWU representative in the dual against Eureka, as the Titans fell, 34-1. 

A total of 24 teams are expected to compete at the Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invitational on the men's side, including six nationally ranked programs. Thirteen women's teams are anticipated to attend, three of which are nationally ranked according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association's latest tournament rankings installment, Jan. 7. 

Competition on Saturday is set for a 9 a.m. start at the Small Athletic and Wellness Center on Cornell's campus. Final results of the tournament will be posted on the men's and women's wrestling schedule pages upon the conclusion of the meet.
