Women’s Lacrosse Sweeps CCIW Player of the Week

Maldonado earns offensive award, Hanson collects defensive

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team saw a sweep of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Week honors, as senior Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) and sophomore Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) picked up the offensive and defensive honors, respectively, announced by the league office Tuesday, March 12. 

Maldonado earns the award for the second straight week and the third time in her career. Hanson, a second team All-CCIW selection at midfield last season, collects her first weekly accolade. In just the second week of the season, the Titans have had four player of the week selections, as junior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) was named co-defensive player of the week last week.

Maldonado was the heart and soul of the Illinois Wesleyan offense during its two games March 4-10. For the week, Maldonado recorded 13 points, an average of 6.5 per game, on six goals and seven assists, averages of 3.0 goals and 3.5 assists per game. 

Against DePauw University Wednesday, March 6, Maldonado led the team with four points and three goals, and assisted on another. Her three goals came on just five shot attempts. In the 22-13 win over Lewis & Clark College Sunday, March 10, Maldonado posted nine points composed of three goals and six assists. Her nine points is tied for the second most points in a game, a record she broke last year, while her six assists is tied for the third most in a game in program history. The 22 goals scored and 14 assists by the Green and White are both tied for third most in program history. 

Hanson displayed her dominance on both sides of the field for IWU during its two games March 4-10. For the week, Hanson recorded eight points, an average of 4.0 per game, on four goals and four assists. She also accumulated five ground balls and five caused turnovers, averaging 2.5 per game, and was dominant on the draw, finishing with 11 for the week, an average of 5.5 per game. 

Against DePauw University Wednesday, March 6, Hanson finished with three caused turnovers, a pair of ground balls and draw controls, and an assist. In the 22-13 win over Lewis & Clark Sunday, March 10, Hanson posted seven points on four goals and three assists, nine draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. 

The Titans return to action tonight, as they play Linfield University at 6 p.m. PT.
