Men’s Wrestling Concludes North Central Invite

Titans return to competition Jan. 6

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's wrestling team capped off the 2024 portion of its schedule Saturday, Dec. 14 at the North Central College Invitational in Naperville, Ill. The Titans return to competition in the new year on Jan. 6. 

Sophomore Austin Johnston (Normal, Ill.-Normal) turned in a 2-2 record in the 141-pound bracket, opening the day with a pin over Cale Stonitsch of UW-Whitewater (2:36). After dropping his second match, Johnston came back in the consolation bracket, pinning CJ Goy of Carthage (1:29) before bowing out in his fourth match of the day.

In the 149-pound bracket, freshman Ameer Alamawi (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) closed out his second bout of the day winning the tiebreaker, 5-2, over Chase Kostka of Coe. A medical forfeit in the third round pit Alamawi against Tyler Starr of North Central, ultimately closing out his day of competition with a 2-2 record. 

After receiving a bye in the opening round at 197-pounds, freshman Elijah Villegas (Chicago, Ill.-Wells Community Academy) faced off with CCIW foe, KC Brichta of Carthage where he won by way of a pin at 2:44.

Also notching a win on the day, in exciting fashion, freshman Chandler Gardner (Marengo, Ill.-Marian Central Catholic) secured a buzzer-beating takedown to win his first match of the day in the 125-pound bracket with a 10-9 decision over Kayden Mueller of Midland. 

Saturday's meet concludes Illinois Wesleyan's 2024 slate of competition. IWU will return to action Jan. 6 for a triangular in Milwaukee, Wis. as the Titans will face Milwaukee School of Engineering and Carthage for a pair of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin duals.
