Women’s Tennis Fights Through Fighting Scots

Titans extend perfect record in non-conference matches

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Hosting Monmouth College Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team extended its perfect record in non-conference matches this season, defeating the Fighting Scots, 6-1. IWU improves to 6-4 on the season, while Monmouth drops to 1-9 overall.

The Titans started the day off with a sweep in doubles action to secure the one point advantage. Sophomores Amber Ehrlich (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood) and Olivia Bell (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) took the win at No. 1 doubles, defeating MC's top duo, 6-3. Senior Kate Christian (Washington, Ill.-Washington Community) and freshman Gabi Lipske (Gurnee, Ill.-Mundelein) blew by the Fighting Scots at No. 2 doubles, taking a 6-0 win. In the No. 3 doubles spot, the freshmen duo of Katie Van Heuklon (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) and Angela Zatloka (Justice, Ill.-Argo Community) won 6-3 to conclude paired play.

Lipske continued her day by escaping with a win at No. 2 singles. After securing the first set, 6-3, Lipske fell 6-1 in the second, forcing a super tiebreaker. Trailing early in the deciding set, Lipske mounted the comeback, taking it 11-9. Van Heuklon breezed by her opponent in the No. 3 singles slot, taking her sets 6-0, 6-1. Bell continued her hot streak, claiming her sets 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Playing in the No. 5 individuals spot, Christian secured her second win of the day behind set scores of 6-3, 6-4. Edwards concluded the win for the Titans with 6-2, 6-0 wins at No. 6 singles.

The Titans return to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, traveling to Wheaton College Friday, Oct. 11, with a 4 p.m. start. IWU will stay on the road, making the short trek over to North Central College for a 9 a.m. date with the Cardinals Saturday, Oct. 12.
