Wong Wins Triple Jump as Track and Field Earns Fourth at CCIW Championship

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Hours removed from winning the long jump, junior Lauren Wong (Morton, Ill.-Morton) soared her way to the triple jump crown to cap off a historic College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Championships, Saturday, May 6, at Carroll University. Wong bested the triple jump field with her personal-best mark of 11.72 meters. 

Wong's victory marked the first time a triple jumper won the event since 2016 when Jill Harmon claimed the outdoor title. Additionally, Wong is the third Titan overall to win the long jump and triple jump at the outdoor meet joining elite company in Lauren Alpert (2012) and Sara Haag (1995).

Freshman Adriana Crabtree (Normal, Ill.-University High) earned the CCIW Women's First-Year Student-Athlete of the Meet after her tremendous performance. 


At the championships, both programs placed fourth. The men's team hauled in 97 points, while the women's squad generated 94 points. North Central College won the men's championship with 152.5 points, while NCC's women's team earned 184 points to secure the victory. 

After the two-day men's decathlon, senior Davis Nguy (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) placed second overall with 5553 points. His point total now puts Nguy third all-time in the IWU top-10 record books. Freshman Ashtin Elder (Chenoa, Ill.-Prairie Central) took sixth with 4343 points, while junior Joshua Klein (Glen Carbon, Ill.-Edwardsville) earned seventh (4334 points). 

Nguy welcomed second-place finishes in the pole vault (3.50 meters), 110 meter hurdles (17.42), and the 1500 meter (5:00.36). Klein's decathlon was highlighted in the discus throw as he topped the field with his heave of 33.74 meters. 

On the men's side, sophomore Ernie Waterson (Bloomington, Ill.-Cornerstone Christian Academy) welcomed a second-place finish in the highly competitive 800 meter with his personal-best time of 1:52.67.

Freshman Evan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) turned in a second-place finish in the 200 meter as he crossed the finish line with a time of 21.60.

The 4x100 meter relay team of senior Keondre Schumacher (Bloomington, Ill.-University High), Lowder, freshman Jake Tackett (Cisco, Ill.-Monticello), and freshman Jahari Scott (Lake Bluff, Ill.-Lake Forest) earned All-CCIW honors with their third-place finish (41.69). 

Sophomore Sam Okewole (Tinley Park, Ill.-Tinley Park) leaped his way to All-CCIW honors as he posted the third-best triple jump mark of 13.33 meters. 

Schumacher, continuing his solid championship, sprinted his way to a third-place finish in the 100 meter as he crossed the finish line with a time of 10.882. Additionally, Schumacher recorded sixth in the 200 meter race (22.26).

The 4x400 meter relay team of freshman Joel Weber (Roanoke, Ill.-Roanoke-Benson), Schumacher, Waterson, and Lowder secured an All-CCIW nod as they registered a time of 3:19.57, which earned them fourth in the league. 

Ending his collegiate campaign, senior Drew Tatlock (North Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community) earned fourth in the high jump with his clearance of 1.89 meters to go along with an All-CCIW nod.

Recording another personal-best mark in the 400 meter hurdles, sophomore Alex Harvey (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) placed fifth as he earned a time of 56.61.

In the 400 meter event, Weber snagged sixth as he turned in a time of 50.65.

For the women, sophomore Annalese Chudy (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) notched second in the 5000 meter race with her mark of 18:05.78.

The 4x400 meter relay squad of junior Jules Grunloh (Towanda, Ill.-Lexington), sophomore Davion Lemon (Marrero, La.-Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology), junior Peyton Pollman (Mapleton, Ill.-Illini Bluffs), and freshman Jordynn Griffin (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) secured second with their time of 4:01.67.

The 4x100 meter relay team featuring junior Avery Smith (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North), Lemon, junior Tori Burke (Clinton, Ill.-Clinton), Griffin turned in a time of 48.64 to secure third in the event along with All-CCIW honors. 

Two Titans welcomed the All-CCIW nod in the 1500 meter event. Crabtree earned a personal-best run with her time of 4:51.81 to notch third in the event. Sophomore Emma McGrath (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Oak Lawn) also tagged a personal-best mark of 4:55.90 as she claimed seventh. 

Sophomore Franchesca Smith (Chicago, Ill.-Bloomington) grabbed third in the triple jump with her mark of 11.34 meters. 

In the high jump event, sophomore Evelyn Wilson (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo) secured fourth with her jump of 1.53 meters.

Sophomores Marissa Hagler (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) and Tori Witzig (Gridley, Ill.-El Paso Gridley) notched All-CCIW honors in the 400 meter hurdles. Hagler finished fifth (1:09.35), while Witzig grabbed seventh (1:10.55). 

The Titans will now turn to the program's last chance meets, Thursday-Friday, May 11-12. Once the locations and times are known, updates will be made to iwusports.com.
