Seven Individuals Finish First as Track and Field Begins Outdoor Slate at Wabash

Five Titans enter top-10 record book

CRAWFORDSVILLE, IND. - After a lengthy layover, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's and men's track and field teams began their outdoor schedule, Saturday, April 8, at the Huntsman Family Invitational, hosted by Wabash College. The meet was highlighted by five individuals who claimed first-place finishes, while five etched their names in the top-10 record book. The Green and White competed alongside Division III Anderson University, Hanover College. DePauw University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, host Wabash College, and NAIA Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. 

The women garnered 158 points, good for second, while the men tallied 138 points, which earned the team third.

Four IWU women walked away with first-place accolades, sophomore Annalese Chudy (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) secured first in the 5000 meter race as she cleared the field of 12 runners with her impressive time of 17:50.13. With her time, Chudy claimed the seventh-fastest 5000 meter mark in IWU history.

Junior Lauren Wong (Morton, Ill.-Morton) carried over her sensational indoor campaign with a first-place jump in the triple jump event as Wong bested the field with her mark of 11.37 meters. In the 100 meter sprint, junior Avery Smith (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) claimed first with her time of 12.66, just 0.01 seconds ahead of the pack. 

In her first collegiate 3000 meter steeplechase race, freshman Adriana Crabtree (Normal, Ill.-University High) blew past the rest of the field for a first-place finish, with a time of 12:09.72.

The 4x400 relay team that featured junior Jules Grunloh (Towanda, Ill.-Lexington), freshman Jordynn Griffin (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), junior Tori Burke (Clinton, lll.-Clinton), and Smith won with a time of 4:07.07.

Three Titan men claimed first-place finishes. Sophomore Alex Harvey (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) came out victorious in the 400 meter hurdles as he leaped past the field with his winning mark of 58.12. In the 200 meter race, freshman Evan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) notched first with a time of 22.00. Lowder now holds the fourth-fastest 200 meter mark in IWU history. 

In the long jump, freshman Jahari Scott (Lake Bluff, Ill.-Lake Forest) took down the field of 26 to take first as he leaped for a distance of 6.71 meters.


The 4x100 meter relay team of senior Keondre Schumacher (Bloomington, Ill.-University High), Lowder, freshman Jake Tackett (Cisco, Ill.-Monticello), and Scott crossed the finish line with a time of 41.70, which secured the team a first-place finish.

For the women, sophomore Carlyssa King (Decatur, Ill.-Maroa-Forsyth) holds the seventh-farthest hammer throw heave in IWU history with her mark of 39.17 meters.

Wong took second-place in the long jump. The Morton, Ill. native recorded a jump of 5.22 meters. 

In the 1500 meter race, sophomore Emma McGrath (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Oak Lawn) claimed second with a time of 5:05.44. Sophomore Marissa Hagler (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) grabbed second in the 100 meter hurdles event as she crossed the finish line with a mark of 15.63. Hagler's impressive time puts her ninth-all time in the IWU record books. 

In the highly competitive field of 30, junior Peyton Pollman (Mapleton, Ill.-Illini Bluffs) earned a third-place in the 400 meter race (1:03.18).

On the men's side, sophomore Sam Okewole (Tinley Park, Ill.-Tinley Park) grabbed second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.76 meters. 

Coming off of a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title in the winter, freshman Isaac Whitaker (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) claimed second-place in the pole vault as he cleared the 4.50 meter bar. Whitaker now holds the eighth-highest pole vault mark in IWU history. 

Continuing his solid freshman campaign, freshman Bobby Mogged (Piper City, Ill.-Tri-Point) brought home a second-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles as Mogged recorded a time of 15.71. In the 100 meter race, Scott secured second with his mark of 11.08.

In the 400 meter hurdles, senior Ethan Ruth (Winfield, Ill.-Hinsdale Central) assembled a second-place finish with a time of 59.02.

Freshman Max Singer (Champaign, Ill.-Champaign Centennial) placed third in the javelin throw with a heave of 47.14 meters. In the 200 meters competition, sophomore Brooks Johnson (Elburn, Ill.-Kaneland) recorded third as he crossed the finish line with a mark of 22.61.

Both programs will compete next Saturday, April 15, at Wheaton's College's Wheaton Invitational. The first event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. inside of McCully Stadium.
