Track and Field Concludes Competitive Meet of Champions Event

Nguy took fifth in the decathlon

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - With a majority of the events being held yesterday, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the remaining seven events of the Meet of Champions event, hosted by Augustana College, Saturday, April 22.

Out of the 22 women's teams in attendance, IWU placed sixth, with 59 points. Division I University of Northern Iowa took the team crown with 163 points. Out of the 25 men's teams, the Green and White secured 14th, with 22 points. Loras College won the two-day event with 128.5 points.

On the men's side, the second half of the decathlon was held. In the field of 16 competitors, senior Davis Nguy (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) posted the best finish of any IWU athlete as he earned fifth, with 5101 points, after the 10 events. Nguy's best finish came in the pole vault where he sprung for a distance of 3.70 meters, good for a tie for third in the event.

Highlighted by his third-place discus throw mark of 30.37 meters, junior Joshua Klein (Glen Carbon, Ill.-Edwardsville) finished the two-day decathlon in 10th-place, as he earned 4071 points. 

Outside of the five decathlon events, the final competition of the Meet of Champions was the men's and women's hammer throw.

In the men's hammer throw competition, senior Ryan Maloney (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) hauled in 13th-place with his mark of 42.70 meters, while sophomore Matthew Wagner (Normal, Ill.-Central Catholic) registered an 18th-place finish (40.99 meters).

In the women's hammer throw, sophomore Carlyssa King (Decatur, Ill.-Maroa-Forsyth) and senior Kayleigh Hall (Monticello, Ill.-Monticello) earned 18th (37.09 meters) and 28th (33.47 meters), respectively.

The men's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams will head to the highly anticipated Drake Relays, Thursday-Saturday, April 27-29, while the rest of the athletes will make the quick trip to Decatur, Ill. for the Millikin Big Blue Friday Night Invite, Friday, April 28.
