Track and Field Wraps Up Competition at Wheaton Invitational

Men’s 4x400 relay team earns victory

WHEATON, Ill. - In the stacked field of 12 women's programs and 14 men's programs, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's and men's track and field teams made the trip to Wheaton, Ill., Saturday, April 15, to compete in the Wheaton Invitational. Out of the 12 teams, the women's team placed fifth, with 23 points, while the men hauled in fourth, with 32 points. The University of Chicago swept the team crowns as the women's team garnered 139 points and the men's team secured 85 points to welcome first-place team finishes.  

On the men's side, the pole vault duo of freshman Isaac Whitaker (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) and senior Christian Gatsos (Brookfield, Ill.-Lyons Township) posted the second and third highest vaults with heights of 4.55 meters and 4.40 meters, respectively. In the IWU top-10 record book, Whitaker now sits fifth, while Gatsos now ranks sixth. 

The men's 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Kade Murray (Watseka, Ill.-Watseka Community), senior Keondre Schumacher (Bloomington, Ill.-University High), sophomore Ernie Waterson (Bloomington, Ill.-Cornerstone Christian Academy), and freshman Evan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) now hold the fourth-fastest time in IWU history with their impressive mark of 3:19.57 to earn a first-place finish in the event.

With freshman Jahari Scott (Lake Bluff, Ill.-Lake Forest) turning in a time of 11.05 in the 100 meter sprint, he is now tied for the 10th-fastest mark in IWU history.

For the women, junior Lauren Wong (Morton, Ill.-Morton) turned in an 11.39 meter triple jump to snag second, while sophomore Franchesca Smith (Chicago, Ill.-Bloomington) recorded fifth in the event (10.50 meters).

The 4x100 relay team featuring junior Avery Smith (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North), sophomore Davion Lemon (Marrero, La.-Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy), junior Tori Burke (Clinton, Ill.-Clinton), and freshman Jordynn Griffin (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) tallied four team points with their third-place finish as the team recorded a time of 49.32.

The 4x400 relay team also took third as the team of junior Jules Grunloh (Towanda, Ill.-Lexington), freshman Bella Gonzalez (Itasca, Ill.-Lake Park), Lemon, and Griffin posted a relay run of 4:03.72.

Out of the field of 21, sophomore Marissa Hagler (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) grabbed fourth-place in the 100 meter hurdles as she crossed the finish line with a time of 16.07.

In the highly competitive 400 meter event, Grunloh earned fourth with a time of 1:00.37. Sophomore Tori Witzig (Gridley, Ill.-El Paso Gridley) generated a fourth-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles as Witzig turned in a time of 1:09.85.

In her first collegiate track and field season, senior Shannon Murphy (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) placed fourth with her time of 20:02.51 in the 5000 meter run.

For the men, the 4x100 meter relay squad consisting of Schumacher, Lowder, freshman Jake Tackett (Cisco, Ill.-Monticello), and Scott sprinted their way to a second-place finish, just 0.09 seconds behind the winning team, to secure six team points.

Continuing his sensational meet, out of the field of 76, Lowder placed third in the 200 with his mark of 21.59.

Sophomore Sam Okewole (Tinley Park, Ill.-Tinley Park) soared to a distance of 12.97 meters in the triple jump event to earn a fourth-place finish. 

Also earning fourth, senior Drew Tatlock (North Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community) cleared the 1.80 meter bar in the high jump event. Additionally, freshman Bobby Mogged (Piper City, Ill.-Tri-Point) garnered fourth in the 110 meter hurdles with his performance of 15.61.

With a 30-man field in the 5000 run, senior J.D. Barrett (Tuscola, Ill.-Tuscola) placed fourth as he turned in a mark of 15:59.60.

In the 3000 meter steeplechase, freshman Zach Marquardt (Minneapolis, Minn.-Washburn) secured fifth with his time of 10:42.50.

The two programs will travel to Augustana College for the Augustana Meet of Champions, Friday-Saturday, April 21-22 for the two-day multi event.
