Men's Golf Shoots Up Standings to Finish Strong at Jekyll Island

Three Titans record rounds of par-or-better, Husley wins individual tournament

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -
Sophomore Griffin Pohl (Western Spring, Ill.-Lyons Township) and junior Jack Bruening (Belleville, Ill.-Althoff Catholic) carded two-under 70s to lead Illinois Wesleyan University's men's golf team up the leaderboard at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Sunday, March 19. The Titans carded their best round of the tournament, shooting a 286, on the par-72, 6700-yard Pine Lakes Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club to finish 17th at 895 for the tournament.


Additionally, freshman Jackson Hulsey (St. Charles, Ill.) won the individual tournament held on the par-72, 6551-yard Oleander Course. Hulsey fired a two-over 74 to finish at 221 over 54 holes to edge Emory's Josh Qian (79-75=68=222) by one stroke. It is the first collegiate win for Hulsey.

Pohl was IWU's top finisher, using his best round of the weekend to climb in a tie for 46th (79-73=70). Bruening, who matched Pohl for the best round of the weekend by a Titan, tied for 110th alongside sophomore Quinn Clifford (Chicago, Ill.-Brother Rice). Freshman Juney Bai (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) completed a strong showing with a one-under 71, tying for 56th at 223. Senior Bobby Beaubien (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) tied for 63rd at 224.

Emory led from wire-to-wire to claim the team title with a three-day score of 842, with Carnegie Mellon placed runner-up at 857. Christopher Newport rounded out the top-three with an 862, led by medalist Alex Price's 202.

Illinois Wesleyan now turns its attention to the Garn Championship scheduled for March 27-28 at the site of the 2023 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship. The two-day affair will feature 36 holes on day one and 18 on day two at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
