Gatsos and Whitaker Named Co-Champions as Track and Field Tackles Day One of CCIW Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's track and field teams began the highly anticipated, two-day, College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Championships, Friday, Feb. 24, at the Shirk Center Indoor Track. After the first day of action, the men's team sits in second, with 35 points, while the women's team is in eighth-place, with 12 points. 

On the men's side, senior Christian Gatsos (Brookfield, Ill.-Lyons Township) and freshman Isaac Whitaker (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) were named co-champions in the pole vault as the duo cleared the 4.45 meter bar. Gatsos tied his personal-best, while Whitaker set a new career-best and is now tied with Gatsos for the fifth-highest pole vault clearance in IWU history. 

Freshman Jahari Scott (Lake Bluff, Ill.-Lake Forest) recorded the first points of the championships for the Green and White by taking second in the long jump with a distance of 6.76 meters. In the same event, sophomore Brooks Johnson (Elburn, Ill.-Kaneland) placed sixth with a jump of 6.50 meters, good for a personal-best. Scott earned eight points, while Johnson collected three, to give IWU 11 in the first of 17 scoring events. 

In the heptathlon, senior Davis Nguy (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) set a personal-best mark in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.42. The time earned Nguy a third-place finish in the race. The Bloomington, Ill. native also posted third in the long jump (6.03 meters). Nguy enjoyed a tie for first in the heptathlon high jump as he tied his personal-best with a mark of 1.76 meters. 

Junior Joshua Klein (Glen Carbon, Ill.-Edwardsville) and freshman Ashtin Elder (Chenoa, Ill.-Prairie Central) both produced personal-best marks in the long jump with distances of 5.63 meters and 5.61 meters, respectively. 

The heptathlon trio all enjoyed a personal-best mark in the shot put. Klein (10.16 meters) placed second in the event, while Elder (10.00 meters) and Nguy (9.91 meters) finished in fourth and sixth, respectively.

With four of the seven heptathlon events in the books, Nguy is leading the field of eleven athletes with 2405 points. Elder is in fifth (2117 points), while Klein sits in seventh (1930 points).

For the women, utilizing a personal-best heave in the weight throw, sophomore Carlyssa King (Decatur, Ill.-Maroa-Forsyth) entered the record books. With her mark of 13.11 meters, King now finds herself ninth all-time in IWU history. 

The distance medley relay squad featuring sophomore Emma McGrath (Oak Lawn, lll.-Oak Lawn), freshman Jordynn Griffin (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), junior Lexi Ward (Downs, Ill.-Tri-Valley), and freshman Adriana Crabtree (Normal, Ill.-University High) turned in a time of 12:42.96, for a third-place finish, and six team points. 

Sophomore Annalese Chudy (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) earned three points in the 5000 meter race as the sophomore posted a sixth-place finish with a time of 18:29.36. Also in the 5000, junior Amanda Wilson (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka) set a new personal-best mark of 19:18.98.

Senior Kinlee Miller (Tuscola, Ill.-Tuscola) earned a sixth-place finish in the pentathlon with a point total of 2538. Carroll's Mary Quinn won the pentathlon with 3203 points. 

The Titans will conclude the championships tomorrow, with a CCIW title on the line. The festivities are set to begin at 10:45 a.m. Live results can be found here, while a live video stream can be accessed here.
