Track and Field Tallies Nine Top-Three Finishes at Spartan Invitational

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's track and field teams continued their 2022-23 indoor slate Saturday, Jan. 29. The Green and White treked to Dubuque, Iowa to compete in the University of Dubuque's Spartan Invitational inside of the A.Y. McDonald Indoor Track. 

The Spartan Invitational included a plethora of talent from across the midwest region that included the University of Dubuque, Central College, Cornell College, Edgewood College, Concordia University Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Loras University, and Division I University of Northern Iowa.

Central claimed the women's team crown, garnering 132 points. Dubuque (108 points) and Wisconsin-Platteville (73 points) round out the top-three. The IWU women's team claimed 66 points, good for fourth. The hosts, Dubuque, won the men's title with 232 points. Wisconsin-Platteville (111 points) and Illinois Wesleyan (72 points) were the next two team finishers. 

For the women, freshman Jordynn Griffin (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) earned her first ever collegiate victory in the 400 meter race as the freshman posted an impressive time of 1:01.40 to best the field. Just over two seconds behind Griffin's pace, junior Jules Grunloh (Towanda, Ill.-Lexington) crossed the finish line in third, with a time of 1:03.42.

Additionally, junior Lauren Wong (Morton, Ill.-Morton) claimed her second triple jump victory of the season with a distance of 10.84 meters, to edge out of the field of 11 jumpers. 

The 4x400 meter relay team of freshman Bella Gonzalez (Itasca, Ill.-Lake Park), junior Avery Smith (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North), Grunloh, and junior Lexi Ward (Downs, Ill.-Tri-Valley) turned in a time of 4:14.78, which earned the quad third place. 

On the men's side, freshman Jahari Scott (Lake Bluff, Ill.-Lake Forest) continued to impress as the freshman earned a second-place jump in the long jump event with a mark of 6.47 meters, out of the field of 13. In the high jump contest, senior Drew Tatlock (North Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community) cleared the 1.83 meter bar, which earned him a second-place finish. 

Senior Christian Gatsos (Brookfield, Ill.-Lyons Township) and freshman Isaac Whitaker (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) both tied for third in the  pole vault as the pair of Titans successfully cleared the 4.20 meter height. 

IWU's 4x400 relay squad featuring junior Kade Murray (Watseka, Ill.-Watseka Community), freshman Evan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), freshman Seth Hamerski (Mount Vernon, Ill.-Webber), and sophomore Alex Harvey (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) took third as the team generated a time of 3:34.55. 

IWU will return home to the Shirk Center Indoor Track for the program's next competition. The annual two-day Keck DIII Select is slated for Friday-Saturday, Feb. 4-5. Friday's start of the pentathlon and heptathlon will begin at 4 p.m., while Saturday's action gets under way at 10:45 a.m. Before Saturday's events, the Illinois Wesleyan seniors will be honored. The senior day festivities are scheduled for 10 a.m.
