91 Titans Named Dave Wrath Academic All-CCIW Honorees

Hayley Earl & Rick Smith receive Jack Swartz Award

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan University saw 91 student-athletes named to the Dave Wrath Academic All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin team for the spring season Friday, June 10. Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) and Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) were recognized as IWU's recipients of the Jack Swartz Award.

The Jack Swartz award recognizes two student-athletes (one male and one female) from each of the member institutions. To be eligible, an individual must have an overall grade point average of 3.50 or above and must have lettered in their respective sport for that season. Trevor Martin (men's soccer) and Jessica McCall (women's volleyball) received the honor this past fall, while Matthew Leritz (men's basketball) and Ellen Gilbert (women's swimming) garnered the accolade for the winter season.

In the fall of 2021, the CCIW Academic All-Conference Team was renamed the "Dave Wrath Academic All-Conference Team", named after long-time Augustana administrator Dave Wrath. Wrath retired from his role as the Associate Director of Athletics for Media and Alumni Relations, serving the Vikings for 40 years, in June of 2021. In addition to his duties at Augustana, Wrath served as the CCIW Sports Information Director from 1996 to 2005 and was instrumental in establishing the CCIW's Academic All-Conference Program in 2005.

Earl continued her reign as the conference's top catcher, as she reeled in First Team All-CCIW honors for the third straight season. She hit .379 with 11 hits, five runs scored, three doubles, two homers, and three RBIs despite a season-ending injury. She boasted an on-base percentage of .419, and went 4-for-4 in stolen bases. On the flip side, no team was successful in steal attempts against the flame-throwing catcher during conference play. Just two steals were even attempted against Earl, both of which she threw out.

Smith, a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-America Honorable Mention, scored a team-high 50 goals this season, while tacking on 20 assists for a team-best 70 points. A First Team All-CCIW selection, he tallied 38 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. Smith, who finished his career second on IWU's all-time goals list, ranked second in the conference in goals per game (3.33), third in points per game (5.00), seventh in assists per game (1.67), and seventh in shots per game (8.50). He was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, April 11, following a six-goal performance against North Central and a three-point effort in a blowout win over Carthage.

In all, Illinois Wesleyan saw 238 student-athletes recognized as Academic All-CCIW throughout the 2021-22 academic year.
