Men’s Tennis Competes in the Millikin Fall Invite

The Titans are back in action Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Wabash Hidden Duals

DECATUR, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team competed in the Millikin Fall Invitational Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 11-12. The Titans along with all but two College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin schools competed in the two-day invitational. 

On the first day, junior Carter Burk (Bloomington, Ill.- Normal U High) played at singles Flight No. 2 where he split matches in the first and second round. Burk came out on top in the second round against North Central with scores of 6-4 and 6-3. The Bloomington, Ill. native finished in sixth place on day two after a loss to Augustana. 

At singles Flight No. 3 sophomore Evan Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) similarly split matches in his two rounds of play on day one. The sophomore took both sets against Millikin University, 6-3 and 6-0 in the second round. Turnbull faced Augustana on day two where he placed sixth overall. Sophomore Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) also competed at No. 3 singles where he beat out Millikin to finish in seventh-place. 
 
Newcomer Shanku Nair (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) represented the Titans in singles Flight No. 4. The senior beat out Millikin with scores of 6-0 and 6-1 to produce a seventh place finish overall on day two. 

Freshman Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) took his first Titan win at Flight No. 5. during the first round on day one. Cross won both sets by scores of 6-2 over Millikin before facing a loss in the second round to Augustana. Cross' split matches on day one put him in the running for third place at No. 5 singles on day two, where the Springfield, Ill. native fell to NCC and finished fourth overall. 
 
Sophomore Jordan Sibley-Diggs (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest) represented the Green and White at singles Flight No. 6 where he beat Carroll University, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in his first round of play but lost in round two against North Central. Sibley-Diggs ended the invite in fourth-place after losing to Millikin in round three. 

Fellow sophomore Joshua Cortez (Chicago, Ill.-Notre Dame College Prep) played at Singles Flight No. 7. Cortez had only one round during day one of the invite where he took the game to three sets, coming out victorious with scores of 6-2, 2-6, and 10-5 over Millikin.

In doubles play, Demetrios Triantafel (Indian Head Park, Ill.-Lagrange Lyons)and Burk went 1-2 at Doubles Flight No. 1 in the invite. During round two against North Central the pairing won 8-4 and finished eighth overall. 

At Flight No. 2 partners Nair and McCoy finished sixth overall as the duo of Turnbull and Cross finished right behind in seventh place after a 8-0 win over Caroll. Cortez and Sibley-Diggs played at Flight No. 3 where the final pairing came in seventh place after winning 8-2 over Carroll. 

The Titans head to the Wabash College Hidden Duals in Crawfordsville, Ind. Saturday, Sept. 25 to play Wabash at 9 a.m. and Hanover College right after at 12 p.m.
