BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- A combination of 18 event wins fueled the Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's swimming and diving teams to surpass Millikin and North Central on seniors' night, Friday, Jan. 24. The women's team toppled North Central with a score of 236-25 and defeated Millikin 174-106, while the men's team bested the Cardinals and Big Blue with scores of 158-48 and 124-108, respectively.
The Titans honored seniors
Maddie Bollinger (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville HS), Amber Gauthier (Battle Creek, Mich.-Pennfield HS), and
Annie Meyers (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West HS) on the women's team, while
Will Garcia (Mundelein, Ill.-Mundelein HS) and
Oscar Schmidt (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington HS) were honored on the men's side.Â
Freshman
Donna Kurek (Roselle, Ill.-Lake Park HS) kicked off the evening with a first-place finish and season-best time of 11:16.74 in the 1000 yard freestyle. Sophomore
Megan Wong (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township HS) completed the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.13 to claim first and increase her season-best as well. Freshman
Lauren Feddersen (Champaign, Ill.-Centennial HS) notched two first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke with times of 1:10.34 and 2:29.73. Sophomore
Ellen Gilbert (Northbrook, Ill.-Glenbrook North HS) turned a time of 2:10.88 in the 200 yard butterfly, 55.07 in the 100 yard freestyle, and 59.37 in the 100 yard butterfly to finish with a trio of victories. Junior
Laurin Ebert (Big Lake, Minn.-Big Lake HS) posted a 5:36.30 time in the 500 yard freestyle to also claim a first-place finish.Â
Senior
Amber Gauthier (Battle Creek, Mich.-Pennfield HS) highlighted her senior night by setting a new IWU school record in the 3 meter dive. Gauthier was the previous school record holder in the 11 dive contest with a score 372.40 in 2018, while she bested the school record with a score of 374.10 in tonight's trial. The previous 3 meter, 6 dive school record was held by Jennifer Johns (1991) with a score of 219.35 in which Gauthier's series of 6 dives concluded a score of 226.55 also.
On the men's side, sophomore
Mason McCauley (Deerfield, Ill.-Deerfield HS) recorded three events wins in the 1000 yard freestyle (9:51.82), 200 yard butterfly (2:05.27), and 100 yard butterfly (54.04). Senior
Will Garcia (Mundelein, Ill.-Mundelein HS) turned times of 1:51.40 in the 200 yard freestyle and 4:58.22 in the 500 yard freestyle to post first-place finishes. Lastly, freshman
Dillon Cherwin (Huntley, Ill.-Huntley HS) posted season-bests and first-place titles with times of 2:15.04 in the 200 yard breaststroke and 1:59.67 in the 200 yard individual medley.Â
The Titans are set to travel to Franklin, Ind. to battle with Franklin College Friday, Jan. 31 with a 7 p.m. ET first swim.Â
