Football Improves to 2-0 with Win at Alma

ALMA, Mich. - The Illinois Wesleyan football team rallied from an early 9-3 deficit to win by a 17-9 score at Alma College on Sept. 10. The Titans improved to 2-0 as sophomore Rob Gallik threw for 219 yards and a TD.

The Titans scored first with 9:19 to play in the first quarter on a 22-yard field goal by freshman Tony Angelos, capping an 11 play, 72 yard drive.
 
Alma scored with 14:21 left in the half on a 2 yard run by Ed Mason, and the kick was no good, leaving the Scots ahead by a 6-3 score. Alma went ahead 9-3 when Michael Reeves 26 yd field goal with 2:53 to play before halftime.

But the Titans went 64 yards in nine plays to score on a 14 yard pass from Gallik to Tate Musselman for a TD and Angelos added the kick to make the score at intermission 10-9.

The only scoring in the third quarter, and second half, came on a 2 yard run by sophomore T.J. Stinde,with 7:41 to go in the third, ending a 12 play, 64 yard drive. Angelos's kick made the score 17-9.

Alma gained a total of 349 yards (218 passing, 131 rushing) to 324 (219 passing, 105 rushing) for Illinois Wesleyan. Gallik completed 19 of 27 passes with one interception and Stinde rushed for a total of 95 yards on 25 carries.

For Alma, Mason had 123 yards rushing on 21 carries and quarterback Jarrett Leister was 18 for 33 for 218 yards in the air.

Titan punter Alex Garvey hit a 70 yard punt in the second quarter, the third longest in IWU records, behind a 72-yard kick by Brett Robinson vs, Carroll in 1984 and a 71-yard boot by Dennis Zic against North Park on Oct. 9, 2010

Senior defensive back Scott Wenzel and senior linebacker Ben Houk each had nine total tackles to lead the Titans while senior linebacker Ryan Gresko had six. Senior safety P.J. Cummings had five tackles with a fumble recovery and blocked an extra point try.

IWU will be at Tucci Stadium for a 1 p.m. game against Aurora on Saturday, Sept. 17.
