Titans Gridders End Regular Season 9-1; Await NCAA Bid

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan's football team rolled to a 34-12 win over Augustana at Tucci Stadium on Saturday (Nov. 12), finishing with a 9-1 regular season record.

The Titans, who finished second in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with a 6-1 league mark, will find out their NCAA Division III playoff fate at 5 p.m. on Sunday at www.ncaa.com. Augustana finished with a 2-8 overall record and was 2-5 in the CCIW. The Vikings finished below .500 for the first time since 1978 (4-5) and lost eight games for the first time since 1922,

The Vikings started the game strong offensively, taking the game's opening kickoff and marching 59 yards in 10 plays before the drive stalled at the IWU 15-yard line. Brady Rogers missed on a 32-yard field goal attempt to turn the ball over to IWU, who scored on their next four offensive possessions in the first half.

After the missed field goal, the Titans responded by going 80 yards in 11 plays, capped by a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Rob Gallik to put IWU on top ahead 6-0 with 6:26 to play in the first quarter. Freshman kicker Tony Angelos's point after attempt failed.

Illinois Wesleyan senior linebacker Michael Whittington intercepted quarterback David Lee on the Vikings' next possession and the Titans went 38 yards in eight plays to extend the lead to 13-0 as Gallik ran in from three yards out for the score with2:48 left in the first quarter. The key play on the drive was a 15-yard personal foul call against Augustana.

Illinois Wesleyan pushed the lead to 20-0 with 13:21 to go in the second quarter as Gallik took the Titans 75 yards in six plays, this time aided by defensive holding and personal foul calls against the defense. Gallik connected with senior wide receiver Joey Driver from 11 yards out and Angelos added the extra point kick.

IWU made it a 27-0 game with 3:23 left in the half when junior running back Cameron Blossom scored on a three-yard run, capping an 18-play, 79-yard drive that chewed up 7:29 of the clock.

Viking freshman safety Tim Maroder picked off a Gallik pass on the first possession of the second half to set up Augustana's first score. Lee completed seven of eight passes on a 13-play, 99-yard march, with the final pass completion coming on a fourth down play to senior tight end Keith Abbey for 42 yards and a score with 4:33 left in the third quarter.

Illinois Wesleyan extended the lead to 34-6 with 14:20 to play in the game when Gallik found junior tight end Parker Carroll for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Lee finished the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run with 4:14 remaining.

The Titans held a 425-305 lead in total yards as IWU amassed 258 yards in the air and 167 on the ground. Gallik threw for all 258 yards as he was 22 for 31 with an interception and the two TD passes. He found juniorJoe Musso for eight receptions for 98 yards.
IWU's leading rusher was sophomore Sean Conley, who had 20 carries for 86 yards.

All 228 Augustana passing yards came from Lee, who was 21 of 32. Abbey caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdown and senior Zachary McCullough caught three for 45 yards. Junior Brett McWilliams was the Vikings' leading rusher with 42 yards on 11 carries and caught three passes for 36 yards.

Titan senior safety P.J. Cummings led the way with eight total tackles, including five solo, while senior linebackers Ryan Gresko and Ben Houk each had seven total tackles. Senior Bert Blodgett recorded the game's only sack for -3 yards.

Augustana sophomore linebacker Erik Westerberg led their defense with 13 total tackles, including three solo with 10 assists.
