This Saturday (Feb. 2) will be “Paint the Shirk Pink” night as the Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team hosts Wheaton at 5 p.m. in the annual PinkZone game.
Last year more than $6000 was raised for the local Community Cancer Center, a place special to Illinois Wesleyan for the treatments received there last season by IWU head coach
Mia Smith.
Again this year there will be an auction, raffles and other fundraising activities to raise the money with donations for local research and care.
Smith was earlier named 2013 Honorary Chair for the third annual Bloomington-Normal Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, to be held on Sept. 14.
During last year's season, Smith was in the midst of her treatment, yet led the IWU Titans to their first NCAA Division III national championship. In 2012, she was named 2012 Russell Athletic/Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year for Division III as well as the 2012 Schelde North America/Women's DIII News Coach of the Year.
According to Smith, the key to her success in overcoming breast cancer was surrounding herself with her basketball players and family and friends.
In addition, an 18-team indoor track meet, swimming and men's basketball along with a junior varsity men's basketball game will also take place at IWU on a full Saturday of action.
The Titan men's varsity basketball team hosts Wheaton 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.
Earlier in the day the Titan men's and women's swimming and diving teams entertain North Central and Wheaton in a triangular that begins at 11 a.m. at Fort Natatorium.
And the indoor track season continues with the Keck Invitational as it is IWU “Seniors' Day” and the fourth-year Titans will be introduced at 10:45 a.m.
The meet begins with field events at 11 a.m. and athletes are expected from Carthage, Washington U., Monmouth, Judson, Trinity Christian, Illinois State, Hannibal-LaGrange, Bradley, Missouri Science & Tech, St. Xavier, McKendree, College of DuPage, Fontbonne, North Central, St. Francis, Aurora and Millikin.
At 2 p.m. is a junior varsity men's basketball game featuring the Titans against a team of IWU alumni, undoubtedly coached by Matt Adams.
