Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Firebirds

Titans turn attention to Augie Wednesday, April 22

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Facing a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship contender, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to Carthage College, 22-2, Saturday, April 18. With the defeat, the Titans drop to 5-9 overall, and 1-2 in league play, while the Firebirds improve to 12-2 (3-0 CCIW).

Senior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) led the Green and White with a pair of points, tallying one goal and an assist. Fellow senior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) notched the other goal in the game, while sophomore Sophie Shore (St. Peters, Mo.-Francis Howell Central) added an assist.

Shore led the team with a trio of draw controls, followed by two apiece from Newton and Riepe. The same three also aided the Titan defense. Shore tallied three caused turnovers, while Newton and Riepe each forced two miscues.

Sophomore Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) was tagged with the loss in goal after playing the first and fourth period. Brown made two saves, but was hampered by 11 goals allowed. Freshman Allison Vervynck (Overland Park, Kan.-Saint Thomas Aquinas) was between the iron for the second and third period, stopping a pair of shots to go along with a caused turnover and one ground ball.

Newton got the home team on the board, as she buried a pass from Shore at the 11:22 mark in the second period, making it 10-1.

With the Firebirds looking poised to score, Vervynck came through with a point-blank save to give IWU the ball. After a Titan turnover, Shore quickly made work on Carthage, as she forced a miscue and snatched up the ball, giving head coach Abby Kushina a chance to call timeout with 6:25 remaining in the opening half. Illinois Wesleyan was unable to use the break to its advantage, as a pass was broken up to give CC the ball back.

Looking to swing some momentum back towards the Titans heading into the final week of the regular season, Newton sent a pass to Riepe for a goal with 40 seconds to play in the contest, closing out the game at 22-2.

Illinois Wesleyan will remain home, hosting Augustana College for a midweek matchup Wednesday, April 22. The CCIW clash will begin at 6 p.m. inside Tucci Stadium.
