Women’s Lacrosse Turned Away by Augie

Titans dip to 5-10 on season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to Augustana College, 15-8, inside Tucci Stadium Wednesday night, April 22. With the loss, IWU dips to 5-10 on the season and 1-4 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while Augie improves to 9-6 overall, 2-2 in league play.

Senior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) led the Green and White with four points by way of three goals and an assist. Four Titans followed with a pair of points, all coming on one goal and an assist.

Newton also led the team with five draw controls, while senior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) and sophomore Sophie Shore (St. Peters, Mo.-Francis Howell Central) finished with two apiece. The Bloomington, Ill. product also led the defense with five caused turnovers, tying her career-best. The trio of Shore, sophomore Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit), and senior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) added three forced miscues each.

Sophomore Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) led the way with eight ground balls, establishing a new career-high. Newton, Shore, and Gibson tied for second after each scooped up four ground balls. Brown was tagged with the loss in goal, making eight saves over the first 30 minutes of action.

The Titans spotted the Vikings a four-goal lead before finding the back of the net in a free position. Newton drew the foul and made the most of it, burying a shot with 10:32 to go in the period for IWU's first goal of the day.

Augie responded with three straight scores to reclaim control, 7-1, but Illinois Wesleyan struck once more in the quarter. Shore fed sophomore Lillie Keeton (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington), who toed the crease to beat the goalie, pulling IWU within five, 7-2.

The Green and White pieced together a mini run in the second to force an Augustana timeout. Shore raced through the defense for a wide open goal to capitalize on DiGiovanni's forced turnover. A few minutes later, Riepe faked out the defense and hit Newton crashing towards the net for a goal, making it 8-4 with 6:10 left in the first half. The trick play caused the Vikings to call a timeout, which stalled IWU's run. Each team managed one more score as Augie maintained a four-goal lead into the intermission.

Trailing 9-5 entering the second half, the deficit ballooned to seven with three consecutive goals by the visitors. DiGiovanni gave the Titans hope with a make on a free-position opportunity to pull IWU within 12-6 into the final quarter.

Gibson found the back of the net for a goal, as she downed the dish from Newton to cut the gap to seven, 14-7, with 11:16 left to play. The sophomore later caused a turnover near the offensive zone and connected with Newton crashing towards net for a goal.

Newton's goal proved to be the last score by either side as the Green and White fell, 15-8.

IWU looks to bounce back in its regular season finale and secure a spot in next week's conference tournament as the Titans take on Elmhurst University Saturday, April 25. Game time is set for 11 a.m. in Elmhurst, Ill.
