Women’s Lacrosse Drops Bout with Pios

Titans dip to 5-8, 1-1 CCIW

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's team fell 22-3 at Carroll University in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin contest Saturday, April 11. With the loss, the Titans stumble to 5-8 overall, 1-1 in league play, while the Pioneers push their record to 11-2, 2-0 in league play.

Following a CU goal, sophomore Sophie Shore (St. Peters, Mo.-Francis Howell Central) set up the Titan offense with a draw control. IWU capitalized on the possession, as senior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) put the Green and White on the board with a goal at the 12:50 mark in the first period. Shore and senior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) each added a goal in the game for the Titans.

Shore led the team at the draw, finishing with four draw controls. DiGiovanni added three, while senior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) posted a pair. Shore also led the team in caused turnovers, as she was behind three of the Titans' four on the day, with Riepe tallying the other.

In goal for the visitors, sophomore Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) made 12 saves on a .462 save percentage in 45 minutes of action. Freshman Allison Vervynck (Overland Park, Kan.-Saint Thomas Aquinas) was tagged with the loss, making four saves while allowing eight goals over 15 minutes between the pipes.

Illinois Wesleyan tallied the edge in saves (16-4), but Carroll controlled the rest of the stat sheet, finishing with advantages in shots (45-11), shots on goal (37-7), ground balls (24-9), draw controls (17-10), and caused turnovers (17-6). The Pios were perfect in clear attempts, going 19-for-19, while limiting IWU to an 8-of-19 showing.

The Titans return to action Saturday, April 18, hosting Carthage College. Action is set to begin at 3:30 p.m., and will be the second leg of a twinbill with the IWU men's lacrosse team, which hosts Carthage for a 1 p.m. game.
