Women’s Lacrosse Downed by Eagles

Titans drop to 3-3 on season

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 23-6, Saturday, March 7. With the loss, the Titans stumble to 3-3 on the year, while UW-La Crosse stays perfect at 3-0. 

Illinois Wesleyan was led in scoring by senior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) and sophomore Sophie Shore (St. Peters, Mo.-Francis Howell Central) with two points apiece, both notching two goals. Sophomore Lillie Keeton (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and senior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) also scored goals in the contest. 

Shore also led the team in ground balls and caused turnovers, having recorded four and three, respectively. Riepe, Keeton, and sophomore Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) added two ground balls each. Newton tallied a team-best six draw controls, followed by four from Riepe. 

Logging the first 30 minutes in goal, Brown made seven saves for the Titans, but was tagged with the loss. Freshman Allison Vervynck (Overland Park, Kan.-Saint Thomas Aquinas) added six saves in goal, as she was between the pipes for the second half. As a team, the Titans recorded the advantage in saves (13-4).

Newton ripped a shot past the goalkeeper to get the Titans on the board, making it 4-1 at the 9:36 mark in the opening quarter. 

After Shore forced a turnover and got the Titans the ball back in their offensive zone, DiGiovanni found Riepe crashing towards the net for a woman-up goal, making it 5-2 with 2:43 remaining in the first period. The Eagles rattled off three straight goals to take an 8-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.

Riepe drew a free-position attempt, and buried her shot into the bottom left corner for a goal to bring the score to 10-3 with 11:18 remaining in the second period. Illinois Wesleyan was unable to get any more shots to fall in the opening half, as the Eagles took a 16-3 lead into the break.

Utilizing a free-position, Keeton net her first goal of the game to make it 16-4 with 12:20 remaining in the third quarter. Shore came up with two unanswered goals for the Green and White, as she was successful on her free-position attempt. The sophomore went five-hole on the Eagles' goalie to pull the score to 16-5.

Despite IWU outsourcing UWL 3-2 in the third quarter, the Eagles notched five unanswered in the final period to close out the game.

Illinois Wesleyan is back in action at home Tuesday, March 10, as host to DePauw University. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Tucci Stadium.
