Women’s Lacrosse Stymied by Tigers

Titans slide to 3-4

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team could not keep pace with DePauw University Tuesday afternoon, March 10, in a 24-5 non-conference loss. The Titans slide to 3-4 on the season with the setback, while the Tigers climb to 2-4 on the year.

Sophomore Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) racked up a career-high 16 saves in the game, while adding in a team-leading four ground balls.

Sophomore Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) put up a team-high four points on two goals and two assists. Senior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) went for three points with a goal and two helpers, while senior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and sophomore Lillie Keeton (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) tacked on one goal each.

Newton was strong at the draw, winning a game-high nine. Senior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) picked up two ground balls with a caused turnover.

DePauw struck for four goals in the first three minutes to charge ahead, 4-0, before Illinois Wesleyan broke up the run. Newton won the ensuing draw control and Gibson buried a shot off a DiGiovani assist to pull IWU within three, 4-1.

Another controlled draw by Newton sent the Titans back on the attack, but the Tigers made two saves to keep the Green and White at bay.

DePauw capitalized on a turnover to get back in the scoring column and up its lead to 5-1. The visitors added five more goals to take a 10-1 lead into the second quarter.

Trailing 14-1 out of halftime, Illinois Wesleyan struck first with another goal from Gibson. DiGiovanni dished out her second assist of the day, finding Gibson cutting straight at goal for a strike.

The Tigers answered with a goal right off the draw, eventually taking a 19-2 lead into the final quarter.

IWU tried to battle back as DiGiovanni found the back of the net off a Gibson helper. Moments later off a key draw win, Gibson threaded a pass through three defenders for Newton's first goal of the afternoon. Sophomore Lillie Keeton (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) kept the run alive with a dribbler past the DU goalie for Illinois Wesleyan's third goal in a three-minute span.

The Titan offense slowed after the spurt, though, as the deficit was too much to overcome.

Illinois Wesleyan embarks on a three-game spring break trip next week beginning with a stop at Pfeiffer University Monday, March 16. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET. IWU's east coast journey will include games at Methodist University, March 18, and Meredith College, March 20.
