Women’s Lacrosse Set to Face No. 20 Chicago

Titans travel to Maroons for 6 p.m. bout

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team will make the trip to the Windy City to take on No. 20 University of Chicago Wednesday night, March 25. IWU (3-5) will face UC (5-3) at 6 p.m. at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. 

The Green and White enters the contest off a 24-1 loss at Meredith College Friday, March 20. Sophomore Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) scored the lone goal of the game for the Titans. Sophomore Sophie Shore (St. Peters, Mo.-Francis Howell Central) led the team with three caused turnovers, and tied for the team-high in ground balls alongside senior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis), as the duo scooped up two apiece. Sophomore Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) notched a team-leading eight saves in 30 minutes in goal. 

The Illinois Wesleyan offense is led in scoring by senior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) with 29 points, anchored by a team-best 16 assists. Her 13 goals are tied for third on the team with Shore. Shore ranks second on the squad with 22 points, while her nine assists are good for third. Gibson rounds out the top-three with 19 points, split between nine goals and 10 assists, the second-most helpers on the team. With 16 goals, senior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) holds the team-lead. Sophomore Lillie Keeton (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) closely follows with 14 goals to sit second. 

An all-around player for the Titans, Newton also paces the team in ground balls (30), caused turnovers (22), and draw controls (52). Riepe follows with 22 ground balls, while Shore and Brown are tied for third with 18 each. At the draw, Riepe and Shore rank second and third with 25 and 21 draw controls, respectively. The duo also follow Newton in caused turnovers, with Shore closely trailing with 21 forced miscues. Riepe has 12 on the season.

In goal, Brown enters with the team-lead in saves, having made 68 over the course of 337:45 in between the pipes. She brings in a record of 2-4 and a .386 save percentage. Freshman Allison Vervynck (Overland Park, Kan.-Saint Thomas Aquinas) has spent the other 202:15 in goal, making 36 saves for a .414 save percentage, and bears a 1-2 record. 

IWU and Chicago will meet for the ninth time, but the first since UC left the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin following the 2024 season. The last meeting went in favor of the Maroons, 26-2, as they moved ahead to 5-3 in the all-time series with the win April 6, 2024. Then-sophomore Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) led the team with two goals. Then-junior Bri Kiser (Crown Point, Ind.-Crown Point) made nine saves in 60 minutes in goal. UC will take on No. 1 Middlebury College, the winner of the last four national championships, Tuesday, March 24, before hosting IWU.
