Day One in the Books in Florida for Men’s Golf

Round suspended due to darkness with one hole to play

SANDESTIN, Fla. - Beginning competition at the Golfweek October Classic Sunday, Oct. 18, the sixth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team posted a 10-over 295 at the par-71, 6760-yard Raven course at Sandestin Resort. The Titans sit in seventh in the 25-team field as play was suspended due to darkness with one hole to play.

Two Titans rank inside the top-25 individually, led by sophomore Ben Gelven's (St. Louis, Mo.-Mary Institute and Country Day) one-over 72. The St. Louis, Mo. native birdied the second and 11th holes, finishing one-under on the front to climb into a share for 18th-place. Junior Pablo Castro (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) turned in a two-over 73, birdying four of his final12 holes and three of his final nine. Castro is tied for 24th in the 125-player tournament.

LeTourneau holds the early team lead at two-under with one hole to go. No. 20 Hampden-Sydney sits second at 287, powered by Til Wagner's leading opening round of five-under, 66. No. 14 UW-Eau Claire (289) is third, with No. 10 Oglethorpe and 11th-ranked Whitman tied for fourth at 291. College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin foe, Augustana, is in sixth at nine-over with one hole remaining.

The Green and White led the field with 57 pars on the day. IWU tied for third-best in par-five scoring at even, while ranking eighth in par-four scoring (4.29) over the first 18.

Second round action is scheduled for tomorrow, Oct. 19. The Titans will begin their day with Alex Rollman teeing off at 11:45 a.m. ET. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat.
