Women’s Lacrosse Opens CCIW Play with Win at Augie

Titans cruise to 19-8 victory

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team opened College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with a 19-8 win at Augustana College Wednesday night, April 9. The Titans improve to 6-6 on the season, and 1-0 in CCIW action, while Augie dips to 4-7, 0-1 in league action.

Freshman Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) led the team with a career-best six points composed of four goals, another career-high, and two assists. Senior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) was second with five points, coming on a team-high five goals. Junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) notched four goals for four points.

Newton and senior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) tied for the team-high in ground balls with five apiece. Fiandaca added three. Newton tied her personal-best in caused turnovers, finishing with four, while Fiandaca followed with three to help lead the defense.

At the draw, Fiandaca and junior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) tallied four draw controls apiece to finish tied for the team-lead, and Newton added three.

In goal, senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) was credited with the win after making nine saves with three goals allowed in 45 minutes of work. Freshman Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) finished the game in net, logging the last 15 minutes.

Illinois Wesleyan held the statistical edge in shots (38-25), shots on goal (26-15), saves (9-8), ground balls (26-22), and won the turnover battle, 23-16. Augustana finished with the advantage in draw controls, 16-13. Both teams found success in their clear attempts, as IWU went 22-of-25, and AC finished 14-of-18.

After junior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) caused a turnover to start the game, IWU quickly capitalized on the opportunity, as Gibson found the back of the net to crack the scoreboard first with 14:19 remaining in the opening quarter.

Rymarcsuk kept the Green and White ahead moments later, making a clutch save on a free-position attempt. Gibson stayed hot, as she found junior Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) for a goal to make it a 2-0 game at the 12:07 mark. Wasting little time, Gibson continued her streak, registering her second goal of the game to put the Titans up 3-0 with 11:15 remaining.

Illinois Wesleyan would go on to score four more goals in the period, via a score from Fiandaca and two from Newton, before DiGiovanni fed Fountain to close out the period 7-0 in favor of the visitors.

The Titans continued to control the game, opening the second period with three straight goals, all coming at the hands of Fiandaca, to go up 10-0 with 11:28 left to play in the first half. Freshman Carly Bajusz (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) found Fiandaca to kickoff the second quarter, followed by Fiandaca burying a dish from Setzler. The senior closed out her scoring run with an unassisted goal.

After Augie notched its first goal of the contest, Illinois Wesleyan struck twice more to take a 12-1 lead into halftime.

The Vikings net the first two goals of the third period to cut into IWU's advantage, 12-3, but the Titans quickly responded. Closing out the period with four goals, Gibson, Newton, and Riepe all scored unassisted, before a goal from freshman Sophie Shore (St. Peters, Mo.-Francis Howell Central), off a dish from Setzler, sent the Green and White into the final period with a 16-3 cushion.

Illinois Wesleyan cruised through the fourth quarter to take the win, 19-8.

The Titans remain on the road and will head to Carroll University Saturday, April 12. IWU will face the Pioneers at 1 p.m. at Schneider Stadium.
